Original Optics

I have an older 110, I think circa 1954, (serial is in the 44 thousands); it has a Bushnell Banner 4x on Weaver tip-off mounts. I read that it's possible this could be the original optics setup from the factory. I bought a Leupold to replace the Bushnell with, but if it's still in original form I'm not going to be the one to wreck that. I'm hoping someone can tell me if that could be the original setup, or not.

According to my book on old scopes, the Banner line started in 1962.

I was unaware tip-off mounts were used on centerfires. Perhaps they were. Even on rimfires today folks think tip-offs are inadequate but they are more than capable on a rimfire. Since they have the same number of screws holding the mount I can't see why the tip-off would be inferior to the Weaver. Maybe it is. Dunno. Just pontificating.

BTW isn't the 110 a late fifties design?

I have no idea if the Bushnell is original. If you are interested in a new scope that is "period correct", there's this, if you can find one...

Definitely not a package gun as Savage didn't start doing that until the late 90's. Also, back then Savage had their own line of Savage brand accessories which included mounts, rings, and scopes.

5-digit serial number in that area I would guess is from 1963 or 64. I had one awhile back with a 52,XXX S/N and it dated to 1966. Should be a stamp on the barrel just ahead of the nut that consists of a number and a letter. If you post that I can tell you exactly what year it was made.

Unfortunately, the Leupold isn't long enough to fit on the tip-offs, so I'll have to replace them. I finally found some for the flat back receivers from Talley Mfg that should work.
