I have a first generation 110L (serial no. 40,000 range) in 30 O6 I'd like to rebarrel to a 308 varmint type.My understanding is that I just can't swap a new barrel in and it's a gunsmithing job. Is this correct and if so exactly what needs to be done? Thanks for the help.

That is correct. The old style has a recessed breach, much like like a Rem 700. You could start with a pre-fit barrel, but the chamber will have to be reamed deeper and a counterbore cut in the breach face.

Thanks. I don't suppose as an alternative the bolt or bolt head could be updated to match the new barrel?

You would have to change the bolt head, the bolt body and the firing pin. The current bolt heads and bolt body has the cross pin location 90 degrees off from the old style. The firing pins are also slightly longer on the old style. You're probably looking at same money either way you go.

I am learning - why is this possible given that he is going from a long to a short action caliber? Does that not matter?
