HI Guys,

I become a member here, to join the community and get some knowledge around my new rifle. I'm reading this forum for a while.

I'm from Germany, from the Black Forest, 50 Kilometres away from the Heckler&Koch Gun and Rifle Company and in former times the famous Mauserwerke Oberndorf . They invented the famous Mauser 98 System. Copies of the system and bolt were used in the Springfield 1903 Series, Winchester 70 Series and still in the Remington 700.
I have several number matching K98k's and Swedish M96 and M38, 1935 7x57mm Mauser's, like Brazil or Chileno. To the neighbourhood of the Swiss I have also a K31 which is very precise (0.55 MOA).
Thatswhy I don't order a clone of a German gun.
Another thing is :I have an Anschutz Match 64, the same type was imported to the US by Savage in the 1960/1970's. So the only choice could be an Savage.

I have ordered a Savage 10 PC in .308, which I will get at the beginning of February. So time to make me Savage nosey -).
If my writing, especially the use of tenses is wrong, don't hesitate to correct me in a friendly way. My school is out for a several years/decades.

I'll give it up before I make an even bigger fool of myself. LOL

Sounds like you live in a very interesting part of the country. Between Mauser and Browning (one of our guys who tinkered a little with firearm design), I think the best of our hobby is revolving.

Welcome! Also a big fan of Mauser.....after a century no one has really done it better! Have an almost new condition Swedish M96 made in 1910. Very accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I think you will like your Model 10 FP....they will shoot extremely well with the right loads.

I do reloading for all my calibers - with Vihtavouri. But will change some calibers to Accurate 4064.
Is there a big differnece between IMR4064 and Accurate 4064 ? I do claculation in Quickload, the differences are less than 10fps.

My Swiss K31 is feed with .308 bullets. I have 147gr/167gr/180gr FMJ BT bullets, so I have some choice.
For a 1-10 twist rate 20" barrel the most accurate loads are with the 168gr bullets with 41.5gr to 42gr 4064 ?

@wbm: About the Mausers- Beautiful, precise and done in an excellent craftsmanship- especially the pre-WW2 Rifles.
My Swede is from 1905 and today I 'll shoot them with Hornady BTHP Match 140gr with open sights.

If we use the assumption that one gains about 25 fps for each additional inch of barrel length, there would be about a 100 fps difference between the two barrels. If we use a 168 grain bullet as you asked about, and assume that you are able to push this bullet at 2700 fps from a 24" barrel (this is easily done), you would have about 4.4 MOA drop at 300 yards, assuming a 100 yard zero. If we assume that you drive the same 168 grain bullet at 2600 fps from a 20" barrel, you would have 4.9 MOA drop at 300 yds, again assuming a 100 yd zero. So, a difference of about 1/2 MOA, or about 1 1/2" at 300 yds, if the assumptions we are working under here hold true in reality.

Thanks barrel-nut for the calculation of speed and bullet drop. I know this difference between the long M96 and the short Swede M38.
Has somebody experience how presicise is a Savage 10 with short barrel 20" and a longer barrel 24-26". At 200, 300 and 500 yds or is there only the difference in velocity and not in accuracy ?
As a constant, the load charge must be the same, the velocity with the longer barrel is higher.

If this thread is to much technically for the introducion, I'll open a new thread in the reloading section

There will be practically no noticable difference between the various barrel lengths out to 400m. at 500 the 20 will start slacking a bit but will stay competitive at 600.
