Thinking of building my 110 that's chambered in 270. Thought about changing it over to a 300 mag. I've looked all over on here and can't find a real straight answer on what all is needed. Also if somebody has a better suggestion on a caliber I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks

All you need to do is swap bolt heads, really simple. As far as cartridges go any of the popular 6.5s will get you as far as you want to go, duplicate the trajectory of the 300 and use a whole lot less powder to do it with no need to change bolt heads. 260 Remington 6.5 creedmoor 6.5-06 or 6.5-284 all work great for long range.

Don't forget the 6.5X55 Swedish.

Anyway, if you intend to to do a magnum and want to feed from the magazine you will need to change that.

Do any of the 6.5s have an advantage over the others?

6.5 sweed has the cheapest lapua brass and there is and a good edge in the 140+ bullets, only down size is usually the need for long action which is no problem in this case.
260 has lapua brass available but it cost more than the sweed. Has less taper in the cartridge than the sweed. Usually handicapped in a short action but again not an issue in this case which should put them about equals except in cost of components.
6.5 creedmoor has the best factory match ammo and it's usually available but hornady brass for loading costs about the same as the sweed brass from lapua and the cartridge is not really going to be able to capitalize on your long action.
6.5x284 has great lapua brass available, not particularly cheap.......has the most juice of the four cartridges........and the worst barrel life as a consequence of that power.
All four are great cartridges for long range.
For your long action I would focus on the sweed or 260 if you plan on high volume of fire and the x284 if you really need the extra power. In a short action the creedmoor would be my choice hands down.
Any of these can keep up with the 300 win mag's normal parameters of trajectory and windage but if your hunting large game at distance (elk or moose) I would just do the 300 for it's retained energy when loaded heavy.

Im building a 6.5swede right now. Bought 50pcs of norma brass for $45. Im really excited to get it out shooting and see how she does. Initially I was going to go with 6.5wsm but opted for the cheaper brass and less powder

I would use the 270.
there has to be a decent BC bullet for it somewere :) Ballistics should bee close to a 6.5-06 (6.5-284) depending on barrellength
no need to swap out a good barrel just burn it out at the range while
learning handloading and shooting fudamentals.
dont know the barrellife of a 270 but perhaps 2000 shots could be had from it..

If your 270 is a rusted out dog for a donorrifle disregard my worthless input.

If you go 260 get the smith/barrelmaker to throat it so you can seat bullets way out and use the casespace for powder

Best bullet going for the .270 in my opinion is the New Berger 130gr Classic hunter with a BC of .497. This bullet has a higher BC than the 140vld and almost equals the 150. Get high velocity and a great BC for caliber. The 6.5s will still prove to be superior past 600 yards. All depends how far you want to shoot and what you want to do with the rifle.

the rifle itself only has about 2 boxes of shells through it. But the stock is broken from where I let my dad take it hunting and he had a bad fall. Lucklu he is ok but the rifle has a pretty marked up stock and scope is unrepairable. May just buy a nice stock and learn how to pillar and bed it for that 270 then after I shppt put the barrel I'll build a 6.5 for a 1000yrd gun. Get practice at 500-750 withy the 270 for now. Any advice on pillar and bedding a new stock and recommendations for a laminated wood stock??

And the rifle is just for target shooting.

My main hunting rifle is a 6.5x284, and I love it.

Where you don't need the extra power of the 284, you can get a lot longer barrel life out of one of the other 6.5 's.

I am currently collecting parts for a new target rifle, and I have decided to go with the 6.5x47 Lapua. You should look into it for your target rifle.
All of the 6.5's are pretty cool, but the x47 Lapua seems to combine the best of all the 6.5's into one.

Having said all of that, 270 isn't a bad round either, you may want to just shoot that barrel out before conversion (as someone already pointed out).

You can stay with .270 Win and re-barrel it with the right twist to stabilize the 165 (1:9") or 175 (1:8") Matrix VLDs or see if you can stabilize them with your current twist. Depending on altitude, others claim stabilization with 1:10" at higher elevations. For extra oomp, you can go with .270 AI. I converted my Savage 110 to .270 AI with 30" Lilja SS 1:8" 3-groove #6 contour (.750" at the muzzle). My current accuracy load is 2993 FPS with the 175.

Think I'm going to just shoot out the barrel to get good between the 450-750 range then step up to a 6.5x284 for a 1000 yard gun after I finish off the barrel I have. I've tried searching for help with pillar and bedding a new stock. Anybody point me in the right direction for help.

Some stock vendors offer pillar bedding so be sure to check.

Before the 6.5-284 came along the .264 Win Mag had a fairly big following in the LR world.
