so what's he gonna do about it?

There lies the million dollar question.
How he handles it will determine if he ever handles anything of mine again.

i have had a lot of work done by other smiths but this was the first time i have used him.
he was cool about it.
sent me a check to cover what he had "lost". took 3 months to get the barrel! than he had it for 3 months before i found out he could not find it!!
still not sure how you lose a barrel??? oh well it could be worse!! time to order a barrel!! lol

Maybe he found someone who was willing to pay him more for the barrel than what he paid you to cover the "loss".

Possible that he's a crook.
It is not impossible to loose one. I don't use a smith much locally anymore but my last favorite local guy had so many barrels laying around it's insane.
Some new, some used, some his own, some from customers and occasionally one someone mailed him and he is waiting for them to make contact and tell him what to do with it.
Not saying it should happen.
I once lost one of my own for two-three weeks. Resurfaced in the back corner of one of my safes a week after I quit tearing the house apart looking for it. Still swear I did not put it in there.

Sometimes things just happen. As long as he works with you, and properly compensates you for the missing blank and refunds your money for the work that was to be done, then there really is not much more you can ask at this point.

Let us know what happens.
