Hello everybody, my name is Grey, and I am from Albuquerque, NM.

I recently purchased my first ever rifle, a Savage 11/111 chambered in .300wm. I picked this rifle up from a local Sheriff, who bought it new and never fired it. It came with 40 rounds of Winchester Super X 180g, and a basic padded case for $300. Not too bad.

The rifle is mechanically unmodified, but I increased the LOP to 15", added an EGW 20moa AL base, and some taller rings to get my eye relief right, and a Tactical Operations ammo cheek pad with some neoprene under it for elevation.

I really like the rifle, despite the recoil being a bit heavy for my skinny-ass, and will most likely add a bit of weight to it, and eventually a muzzle brake - although I dream of using a suppressor instead, that's a bit out of my price range ATM.

My intentions for this rifle are primarily hunting, but I enjoy bolt guns so much, that I have been taking it to the range as often as possible, and have yet to take it hunting. Our local shooting range only costs $6/day/shooter, and they have 25yd increments out to 200, a few gongs at 550 and 750, and plans to add a 1k gong as well, so it's a pretty good place to play.

I plan on having this rifle for awhile, and building it out to be an effective long range precision machine. Right now, my largest obstacle is the optic, which is a cheap OEM Bushnell 3-9 x 40. Once that is replaced (most likely with a Vortex Viper PST or HST 6-24x50), I also plan on adding a muzzle brake, replacing the trigger (non-accutrigger model), the stock (which I may just fill and bed), and eventually the barrel.

Here is the rifle as it sits today:

Nothing special.

Here is my best group zeroing the rifle at 100 yards using the cheapest ammo available, Remington Managed Recoil 150g:

This was a three shot group, then I corrected 1 click back to the right (you can see the previous group taped up to the right side of center, target is rotated about 70 degrees clockwise)hoping for dead center, and it went through the same hole, so I just left it alone.

Anyways, looking forward to asking a lot of questions about parts compatibility, quality, suggestions - and eventually hand loading. I have around 90 shells of once fired brass, a mix of Remington, Winchester, and Hornady.

Hi Grey. Welcome. I was in N.M. once heading South. I turned left in Albuquerque and ended up in Iowa.

Hey there.

I'm in Albuquerque too. I'm picking up a 110 FCP in 300wm this coming Friday.

What range do you go to?

Welcome.

Live about 8 miles north of Ramah in the Zuni Mountains. Good idea about the brake. Unless you do it yourself consider getting one from Score High.
A little hard to find the shop, off North Central on Cochiti, but those guys do great work.
