I got the barrel in late in the day yesterday. Quickly blasted and painted the barrel last night. Once the bedding sets up I'll clean it up, install the trigger and cut some action screws and it will be good to go. Think I'm going to throw on a Sightron SIII 10-50x60mm off one of my other rifles for now. I'll post a picture when it's completed and ready for the range.

Looks good. What did you use to paint the barrel?

I had Duracoat and a HVLP spay gun ready to go, but decided to just try a plain old $6 rattle can of Rustoleum first and I'm happy I did. Please note that I blasted everything with a coarse grit abrasive at high pressure and cleaned it with brake cleaner first though. The metal was "very" rough, so I'm not worried about adhesion at all. After 4 coats of Rustoleum the paint covered up most of the roughness and left a nice flat/matte finish that duplicated the finish on the Savage 110BA bolt handle almost exactly.

My goal was to complete this build as inexpensively as possible. I have no problem spending tons of money on my custom builds, and often do, but just felt like going cheap on this one. I'm pretty sure I have just under $700($691) in this rifle as it sits, minus the scope and bipod. I already had several muzzle brakes and a box of scope rings down the basement that I've accumulated over the years, so those were "freebies" and not included in the $691 total.

What color/finish Rustoleum did you use? Last time I tried a can of Rustoleum it didn't match anything else on the gun and I got pissed off and had it Duracoated. lol

Seems to really like the 300gr Berger's. 300gr SMK's were a very close second. 15mph winds with gusts to 25mph, so probably not the best day to start testing ammo. Today was really just to pick a bullet though. Loads were very light. 82gr of H1000 with the 300gr bullets and 84.5gr with the 250gr bullets. Still need to fine tune the powder charge and OAL. The one flier out of the two 5-shot groups was a fouler after a thorough cleaning. Very confident that I will be able to shoot "clover leaf" 5-shot groups at 100 yards all day long. I only shoot 100 yards when working up loads though.

A BIG THANKS TO JIM AT APACHE GUNWORKS FOR THE AWESOME AND REASONABLY PRICED BARREL!!!

Those big .338 holes make that dime look small.
