If you were going to build a 1000 Yard rifle, what caliber would you choose ?

6 Dasher/6XC or 6.5x47, 260 rem for targets.

For hunting 338 Lapua or Edge.

260 bedded in a nice stock with adjustable LOP and cheek rest...reasoning for a 260 is excellent ballistics, wide variety of brass and high BC bullets and great barrel life.

This is the F Class forum is it not? Yes it is but do you plan on shooting F-Open or F/TR? It does make a difference. Also if you plan on shooting on someone else's range? You need to know if there are any range restrictions that would prevent let's just say using a 338 Lapua. Some ranges have a safety fan that restrict the speed of bullets so they can not leave the range. Note that the speed of a 55gr 223 bullet can be faster than a 300gr 338 bullet because the 338 will carry better. Now maybe you understand why i asked the question. For open class the 6's and 6.5's rule the roost for now. For F/TR you have to choose between the 308win/7.62x51 and the 223rem/5.56x45. Both will go to 600 yards with ease but the latter is harder to shoot at 1000 but it can be done.

F/tr 308, f open 284. F open is mostly a 7mm variant game with a few hot rod 6.5mm guns in it.

I really like a 6.5. The 7mms are great but you end up needing lots of powder and recoil to beat a 6.5. My personal fav is the .260 Ackley, all the great things of a 260 and then some. The same performance of the 6.5-284 in a smaller case with less powder, which translates into better barrel wear.

The 6's and 6.5's are good for low recoil. When you go to the 7's you are pushing 50 more grains of lead but you can get much better BC.

The 6 Dasher recently set a 1000 yd world record. I have seen several clean all three relays at 600 and very close to that at 1000. The 6BR, 6XC (limited brass from Norma) have done well also. I am interested to see if anyone jumps on the 6 SLR.

Formulating a plan may include a trip to the next 1000 match and see what the best shoots. ask around. I believe that local altitude and range(wind) conditions may have some influence on your decision.

i think i would build a 300 wsm and send a 230gr. berger down range at a little over 3100 fps. if you were hunting, that would make a decent hole in almost any animal. if you were punching paper in competition, that sure would be a pretty good start. that will happen at williamsport this year at the 1000 yard range. a guy at our varmint matches shoots a 6 SLR...i dont know all the specs or load but i do know he shoots HBN coated bullets and loaded it to another shooter for one of our matches and that shooter that never shot the riffle shot 31 out 40...nice riffle and very accurate.

Actually that happened at Williamsport a few years ago. The current heavy gun record was set with a 300 wsm there by a guy name of Matt Klien.
The most popular cartridge now is the 6mm Dasher. It now holds the record for the smallest group ever fired at 1000 yds by any gun regardless of weight.
But since it was shot with a light gun it only counts as a record in that class. Sounds dumb and it actually is but thems the rules.
As for a 300 wsm slinging a 230 Berger at 3100, id definatly need to be there and wittness that.

Well thanks for the invite but i wont be going to Bodine or anyplace else for any snowball shoots. However i am curious about your claim and will be following up on it.
As for Matt Klien weve never met but have had a fair ammount of correspondence. Im curious as to why he wouldnt choose to hunt with his 300wsm also since with these type velocities
a 30 cal 230 would give his 338 lapua imp a run for the money out to some decent distance. And what would the extra capacity of larger cases do?
