Shilen .223 Wylde 1:8 question

How do the the 77/80 bullets fit this barrel? I read a review on Midway that said the throat was really short and anythin longer than 52g Hp had to be seated way past the shoulder of the case. Anyone have any experience with this Shilen barrel?

You can have the throat reamed by a competent gunsmith to the exact dimensions you need to seat the larger bullets out as far as you want. But the accuracy of the lighter bullets may be affected, if you seat them too far off the lands.

So the throats are indeed too short for heavier bullets?

You would think that with a 1:8, they would have a little longer throat for the heavier bullets.

I have two Shilen 223 Wylde 1:8 barrels one I got from Jim at Northland and the ones from Northland are throated for the longer bullets I have no problem loading the 80 SMK or 55 NBT in the same chamber It will even shoot the 52 Amax good

55 NBT left 80 SMK right and these are seated .020 off the lands

If it has a Wylde chamber, it will not have a short throat. That is basically all that the Wylde does, other than slightly generous body dimensions for reliability of shooting anything you put in it.

I just recently received a Shilen SS barrel with the Wylde chamber and 1/8 twist from Jim. My seating of the 80 grain SMK and the 80 grain A-Max approxmates what rich44 is getting. I'm very impressed with the accuracy of Shilen barrels. My current round count is now 165 and I've gotten a number of groups in the .3s with the 80 grain A-Max and 75 grain VLDs using Varget. Being retired, I now get to shoot quite often, hitting the range at least three times a week....................life is good when your burning powder.
