I am just dealing on a 303 TD and it appears in the pictures I have of it, that the forearm is much lighter coloured wood than the butt stock as if it may have been swapped out. Is the serial number marked on the underside so a person can tell if it is original or not? The rifle is several hundred miles away so won't get an up close and personal until after it arrives in the mail.
Thanks
Jim

In my experience, that's not uncommon...

On mine, the forearm was "sap wood", per the guy who cleaned (was really dark and dirty), refinished and re-checkered mine, keeping the "vintage" look that I wanted (no sanding was done); and he was able to get the colors to be a better match. And yes, the rifle's serial number was on both stocks too.

Here is the "before":

And the "after":

Good luck, and tight groups.

Thanks for the reply, the fellow that I am getting it from was told by the original owner that it was all original,so your explanation is most likely correct. Nice job on your refinish, that is a rich color and really looks great. Also am envious of your case,is that something that Savage sold with the take down models? What caliber is your rifle?

Thanks Jim.

Mine is a Model F Lightweight Takedown, 1938 vintage, in .300 Savage.

I got lucky and found the case in a local antique shop, I had to re-sew one of the straps and clean it up, but it fits the Savage really well. And I guess the takedown case just goes well with the takedown rifle.

Tight groups.

The serial numbers should be stamped on the underside of the buttplate, the buttstock and the back of the forearm.
