Hello all, I'm not too familiar with the ring and base brands and could use some direction for mounting my SWFA straight 10 (30mm tube) to my new FLCP-K. I figured a one piece pic rail and matching rings of course. Specific recommendations?

Also, the gunshop lost the magazine to the rifle and I can't find a replacement. Pointers?

EGW make a lot of good mounting options for Savage rifles.

Well, I know whats out there but I don't know exactly what to get. I'm fairly certain I'll need low rings.

1. Aluminum or steel? I'm assuming rings and bases should match by material.
2. 20 or 0 MOA? I have to turn my scope up 6 rotations (60 minutes) to zero on my AR15. Would an elevated base help?
3. On ring height I found this: http://www.opticstalk.com/how-to-determine-proper-ring-height_topic5946.html I think I'm gonna go with "low" rings to start.
4. Bipods: I was thinking harris 6-9" but I have no idea if I want the S-series and/or notched legs. HALP haha

How far do you plan on shooting? A .308 will need 15moa of elevation at 600y from a 100y zero. Unless you are planning to shoot way out I doubt you will need a tapered base.

On a .308, Aluminum is fine and lighter than steel, cheaper, too. But don't go too cheap. As JCalhoun said, you don't need cante within 600 yards, but also, there's no harm in getting 20MOA in case you decide to shoot long range later and need it. Only harm might be trying to get it low enough for a 100 yard zero (as opposed to 200, for example). I get away with low mounts with my fixed power SWFA's, lower is better.

I prefer swivel bipods so as to not struggle on uneven terrain. Notched legs are available on swivel and non-swivel models.

Thanks for the replies gents. My rifle is in 223 and my shooting will not exceed 600 yards. Eventually, I see myself rebuilding it into a 6mm or 6.5mm caliber for 1000 yard shooting which would require a tapered base. Like foxx said, I'm worried about being able to zero it at 100 yards.

Burris signature zee rings have plastic/hard rubber inserts between the rings and tube. Those rings can be offset so as to make the equivalent of a 20 MOA mount. They are nice to have, though a little more expensive. Besides the offset capability, they cushion/protect your tube from marks.

I went with a EGW 20base moa base and some Burris Signature Zee rings... I would buy again, especially the Burris rings...

Bill C,

Just something to kick around, my .260 used 13moa at 600y and 28moa at 1000y from a 100y zero. I never needed a tapered base. The .308 will use about 38 to 40 moa at 1k.

well I don't plan on shooting .308 so that is certainly good info J! Thanks for the help!

I purchased a Near Mfg. base, made out of 400 grade SS that is stress relieved and hardened. The base fit my model 10 Precision without any bedding in. It is expensive but it is beautifully machined. I then used Burris Signiture Zee rings, which are also steel and when combined with the 10 MOA base and +10 inserts will give me 20 MOA if I need to shoot out further than 500 yards.

Bill, I have the following on my 10FCPK (http://www.savageshooters.com/showthread.php?38004-DzNutz-10FCPK-Range-Report-Journal)in .308:

Just an update to this thread (will post a picture soon). Thanks for all the pointers and what not. I ended getting a TPS 0 MOA base and their TSR-W 30mm low rings. A Harris Bipod and a Southwest Precision cheek rest have completed the rig.

I'll be moving very soon and to wintry location so I won't be able to post a range report for a good while. Thanks for all the pointers again!
