444-6mm

Am I correct to gather that you are referring to a 6mm Remington necked up to take a 44 caliber bullet?

Not sure either Boots. If he is, I have nothing for him. If he is thinking 6mm-444 then I would swear that Kerry from Match Grade Machine used to neck those up and down along with 45-70 back when they were Virgin Valley Customs but haven't heard anything on them lately and a quick check of current chamberings on MGM did not yield answers.

This is a full length 444 Marlin case necked down to 243 and blown out to AI specs with a 40 degree neck. Built by a gentleman in Ok. by the name of David White who does a lot of stubbie work on H&R rifles.I was wondering if anyone else had gone this route and was just asking. Thanks Joe

Basically it sounds like a 6mm Remington AI. Since the 444 brass is basically constructed like the 30-06 with a rim (and straight walled of course) and just glancing at my book here for a guesstimate on perceived volume, you would be in the same ball park as a 6-Rem-AI.

Other than the "Odd Factor" or unless you need the rim to work in a certain type of firearm, I don't see the benefit to it over a 6-Rem-AI or a 6-06. In a bolt gun either of the two latter I mentioned would feed easier.

I haven't built one but nicking down rimmed cases is quite popular for centers and in this case H&R. Should scoot along well.

Also a neat conversion for old falling block or rolling block re-barrels.

There are a bunch of wildcats based on the .444 Marlin case. JD Jones made a whole lot of wildcats from the .444 case.

There is one wildcat that is called the 6mm Predator made from the .444 case as well. Might want to check it out.

A 6.5 might yield better barrel life and also better downrange ballistics ? The only negative is that one generally pays more for 6.5 bullets, but right now one can hardly find the Berger bullets anyhow...
