Is this a common problem? What can I check?

It does not matter if the bolt is open or closed, the thumb safety is stuck in the fire position and will not slide back to the safe position. Gun is almost brand new that I recently bought from an individual. I would say altogether, maybe 50 rounds have been fired from this gun. He says he never had any problems with it.

Surely I am not doing something wrong. I also have a Savage 111 and have absolutely no problems with it.

Take the action out of the stock and take a long look at the safety, if you have a 111, compare the two. I'll bet you have something blocking the safety and it will be very evident. Keep in mind that the safety only blocks the trigger, not the sear.

Is there a breakdown of how to do this somewhere? I have never torn one down and do not know my way around the internals of a firearm. I know the sear has something to do with the trigger mechanism, or at least I think it is! LOL!

Does it do it with the barrel receiver out of the stock? If it does I would say the pin that holds the sear to the receiver is bent slightly. If it doesn't , the stock itself is interfering with it returning to the set position.

I once reinstalled my safety wrong after doing some trigger work. There is an s curved like spring steel that rides on a pin on the bottom side of the safety. I had the pin riding along the spring/pin in the wrong location.
