I am trying to install my new McGowan barrel and it will not thread into the receiver, the first one or two threads will grab then it stops like it is cross threading.

I tried 5 other barrels that I have including Savage, McGowan and Apache. The only barrels that will fit the action are the original barrel and another McGowan that I have. I tried the barrel nut and it wont fit the other Savage, Apache and McGowan barrels either.

The action and barrels are all small shank, Anyone else ever run into this?

If you have a scope rail mounted, try removing the front rail mounting screws.

Sounds like the threads are different on the new barrel, but I guess you know that already. Check with the supplier for specs on the barrel, could have shipped you the wrong barrel.

Got it figured out, Loctite in the action and barrel nut threads.

Sounds like you got your problem figured it. For others checking this thread, thought I'd throw my recent learning experience on here. I found out that if you torque the action wrench too tight it will only allow the barrel to turn in a few threads and it won't go any farther. Once I loosened the action wrench the barrel screwed into action with ease.

The other reason some barrels will not thread in is due to the fact the sharp edges of the barrel threads need to be flattened a bit. My McGowan would not screw in and I had to use emery cloth wrapped around the thread, twisting it in my hands until the sharpness was removed. Threaded right in after a few minutes of emery sanding.
