I'm not having much luck finding stocks for the target action, especially a stock with no inlet and (ideally) one that accommodates that third action screw. HSPrecision has one, but it doesn't use the middle screw. What else is out there for this action? (not benchrest)

I'm looking at the Bobby Hart LRT stocks on Stockys, but I'm confused whether it's inlet or not.

If I have to go with a blind magazine style stock, is it worthwhile to try to adapt it / pillar bed it so that there is a strong mount on that center screw?

Suggestions?

I am in the same position as you. I have never done it, but i think adding the middle pillar would be relatively easy to a blind mag stock. I have found these stocks, but just not sure how much you want to spend. There was a SSS stock in the classifieds.

The Hart LRT is inletted for a blind magazine cutout. I installed a Target action in mine, by gluing a wood block into the mag cutout, then drilling through it and installing a third middle pillar. I then bedded the entire action with Devcon. The end result worked out very well, but it did involve a bit of work. I'd love to post pics, but suddenly my phone app will not allow it!?!? PM me if you're interested in the pics, maybe I can PM or email them to you.

Thanks! I'm a fan of HSPRecision stocks but this Hart LRT looks like a good stock at a steal of a price, so this helps a ton.

Honestly, I'm trying to be as cheap and lazy as possible without compromising accuracy much. :)

They really are a good deal in my opinion, and once bedded as I did mine I honestly don't think you're sacrificing anything to a more expensive stock as far as accuracy. And they're beautiful to boot.

I ordered mine from Manners. I should have it in a couple of weeks.

This is my bell carlson I added the 3rd pillar to and bedding a few weeks ago...ive done a few and its pretty simple...this is my riffle and I was in a hurry to get it done as I had a match to shoot in on saturday of the week I bedded it...I filled the magwell with devcon.

I am curious about the Bobby Hart stocks. I sent an e-mail to Stockys and was told the Bobby Hart would not fit the Savage Target action. They did refer me to I believe the HS stocks. Many where out of stock though. I think building on the Target action would be fun. But need to line up all the right parts first.

You can use any savage stock with the right screw spacing for your target action...most target actions are 4.4 screw spacing now but there are a few variances still around...I shot mine with just the front and rear screw for about 850 rounds before I add the pillar/third screw and bedded it.

LongRange is correct. As long as your Target action is based on the 4.40" spacing, the Hart stock will work. There will be no middle pillar unless you add one, but you can get by with just the front and rear ones.

Yes, this is all true, but my question is about stocks which use the middle screw, or can be adapted to do so. I'm not interested in ignoring the middle screw for this project. A bedding job such as LongRange posted could be done on a stock which is not already inlet for DBM or hinged floor plate, but I'm also curious if there are any non-benchrest stocks out there which specifically already support this single shot / three screw arrangement.

The Hart is a blind-magazine design, which, as I stated in post #3, can relatively easily be modified to include a third pillar. Offer for pics/instructions on how to do so still stands. ;-)

The stock I posted is a blind mag third pillar installed and bedded...if you want a three hole single shot stock for a savage target action contact manners or McMillin and wait 6mons to a year for your stock or buy a 4.4 stock add the pillar and bed it...I just looked on stockys and they have several in stock.

OK, so the options are:

HSPrecision PSV106, currently in stock and on sale at Stockys
Manners or McMillian - very long wait and almost $900, still need to bed them
Pick any 4.4" centerfeed stock for blind mag and modify it with a pillar + bedding + drill screw hole

*sigh*

Yes if you want a good stock...also you could go with an aluminun stock like the xlr, mcrees or LARS if you like those types of stocks but they are spendy and im not sure about wait time....I almost went with a mcrees for my 260 build....choate makes a 3 hole stock too if I remember right. My vote would be the blind mag and add the pillar its not hard and I or someone else here thats done it could walk you throught it over the phone....if you have access to a drill press I could loan you all the screws you need to do the job including the center screw to mark the bottom of the blind mag and the screw to hold the pillar centered while you bed the pillar.
