I got this a few months ago. The first thing I did was to order a Boyds stock for it. I went with the option of the hard laminate. The regular black is just too light of wood being used. Seen lots of cracks happening with them. I made a small pillar to fit above the factory one in the stock to make a solid fit to the action. I never bedded it as I feel it does not need it. It is a 223 Remington

The barrel of this thing was the worst I have seen for being rough. I have close to 1K rounds though it now and it is finally getting smooth. When it was brand new it was shredding patches when I first cleaned it. I was stripping it to bare metal after each range trip. It started to really come together around 600 rounds. Now it is shooting like this. Midsouth Dogtown 55gr HP with RL10x powder. The far right hit was the bipod slipping on the table when I shot the last round. Ya I know no excuses but that is what happened. I do all of my shooting just as the gun is shown.

Well done! Did you do anything with the trigger or was that group shot with the factory setup?

And I'd not thought about the differences in material between the painted stocks and the clear finished stocks. If it's a genuinely organic deficiency of the wood, that would make a significant impact on stock choice.

Changed the spring on the trigger. It is better but has a little catch in it. It is about 4 lbs and wayyyyyyyy better than the factory.

The wood is really different on the colored laminate than the painted. I have had a few of the painted ones on a couple of RF's and they are really weak and soft. I will not even consider one of the painted ones now. If I want black, I am going to order one of these then paint it.
