Action threads clean up

Decided to pull the barrel off my Axis that I rebuilt last year today. There is a very tight spot in the threads about 1/2-3/4 inch in that binds no matter how much I clean them up.

I'm wondering if there is an easy way I can tell if a Smith needs to clean them up or if there is something more I can do myself to true then up a bit.

Barrel changes are a pain with this hiccup!

I know about that one. I had the scope base removed to put it in the action wrench. It's an actual thread issue and the barrel nut rolls on the barrel fine. Action binds regardless with two different McGowen Barrels.

Inspect barrel threads, base screw may have deformed the thread, look for damaged thread. Thread can be cleaned up with small triangle file.

Barrels are good. One is brand new. Both bind at same point in action. I do all headspace work with scope base removed

Do you remember if the factory barrel would bind in the same spot? Obviously something's tight, and I wonder if McGowen threads may be cut to a slightly higher class spec than Savage factory threads. If there's a slight warp in the receiver or misshapen groove in the internal threads, a looser-fitting barrel might not mind. If that's the case, though, a smith might just be able to chase the threads in the receiver with a tap.

Not sure I sold the factory barrel a long time ago. But that's a good possible observation.

Typically all of the matte finish guns have a small amount of residual shot left in that area from shoot peening. Once one of those little buggers gets mashed into the threads, they can be difficult to get out. You'll have to use a hooked scribe and follow the threads to find it.
