I know that you aren't supposed fire a 5.56mm in a .223 semi auto like an AR-15 but is it safe to shoot in a bolt gun?

W.T..... AR's vs. Bolt guns has nothing to do with it.

The 5.56 NATO chamber and the 223 Rem chamber are different. In some instances that may matter, in some it may not.
Personally I've never had any 5.56 ammo, not chamber in a 223 rifle. At this point, an AR-15 with a 223 chamber would be much less common than a NATO chamber.

The cartridge is the same dimension but the difference is in the chamber. The 5.56 has a longer leade and can be loader hotter by some manufacturers.Basically the 223 is loaded for accuracy and the 5.56 is for reliabity in a large number of firearms by a large number of manufacturers.
