What is the max allowable headspace of brass cartridge and bolt.

I am thinking ideal is .004 and a Field gage is .012 but cant rememeber. IE like max serviceable would be around 0.010

I have a rifle that I think has too much headspace, not a savage.

What cartridge? Not sure but I think it can be different depending on cartridge.

..or you can just rent the gauges and make your life easy! .http://www.4-dproducts.com/displayitem.php?rowid=226&tname=rental

Jeez been crunching numbers all day on a job and one look at that sheet gives me a headache.
From what I can tell with a new cartridge its got .008" headspace or about .004 too long.
Closes on a no go gauge.

Know I can just neck up and back down create a false shoulder and reload then on 1x brass set my dies to the headspace, but would rather get the headspace right which means barrel work.

It's in the L! and L2 dimensions. Max ctg and min chamber difference = L1 .04 mm ~.0016", L2 .5 mm ~.002;but see -.020 on ctg, then diff = L1 .024 mm ~.009" and L2 diff = .025 mm .010"
The answer is that with chamber and ctg to spec, the distance from case head to bolt face is .0016" to .010".

So at .008 it should be useable but not ideal.

I did some research on the internet and this is a mauser action.
Found some data for the 8x57. Never could find this exact info on the 9.3x62 for the 3 gages.

8x57 headspace gages
1.874 - GO
1.880 - NO-GO
1.884 - FIELD

Which says the field gage is .010 for the 8x57.

What ever you're planning, you need to measure headspace or head clearance in your rifle if you suspect it is too great = out of spec. Renting headspace gauges is the easy way to find out.
