i've have never had a savage/stevens before. always a rem guy. but i wanted to try a build as much on my own as i can. so i sold my rem 700p .308. to fund this one. its starting as a stevens 200 .270 i bought new for 200.00. i went to sss and got there bolt knob. i did have to polish it. i did not know it was in the raw. then i orderd the fluted bolt. i really like it. looks good i think. i also replaced the plastic trigger gard with a metal one from sss. the stock is on its way from stockystocks. its the b&c DuraMaxx pillar bedded. but i will be bedding it also. the barrel is next. im thinking of a Fluted Barrel from lilja. nows the hard part. what do i chamber this thing in? i want it to pull double duty. range and nothing really bigger than deer. was thinking 6.5x47 lapua. but any help would be nice. will post more pics of stock soon.

Nice build up so far. I'd go with 300WSM or 260rem if I was you. 260rem. will give you less recoil and you'd have no problem hitting at a mile.

Good luck,
Merritt

I got the Lee kit from Midway USA for 87.00 and a trickler, a set of calipers and I have been reloading with it ever since. Works great and has paid for itself already.

Good luck,
Merritt

what do you guys think of the 257 Robert's, 6mm Remington (.244), or the .260?

I've only ever seen the 260rem in action. It was silenced and it definately was getting the job done. The guy that owns TVP in ohio has one and he was hitting at a mile all morning with one.

Good Luck,
Merritt

being that you dont reload 260 rem is what i would recommend like the 6.5's with 140 bullet for deer this is most commercail avalible if you did reload then we be in a debate over 6.5x55swede, 6.5x47 lapua, 6.5x284, and 264 win ammo is avalible but its hit and miss and $$$

on a second note whats wrong with your 270 barrel just use it till you get the reloading stuff and then you could do 6.5xo6 with some of the 270 brass or maybe a faster 6.5 reloading opens so doors you never know which to take

Nice looking build so far. (You know SSS sell polished, and then bead blasted handle, also they are a bit easier to polish out to chrome like finish.)

I think the 6.5x47 Lapua would be an excellent choice. (I am not a big fan of the 260, it has been around for years, and never really caught on until lately) I have a friend that shoots Benchrest competitively, and he takes a 6PPC to Africa, for dear, and small critters. Heck he says it works great. With that said, I don't see why a 6.5x47L could not do the job.

I recommend a 260. ;D

What ever you decide just stick with either 6.5 or 7mm boolits.

i know that i can buy 6.5x47 from lapua. and i think you can get them from cabelas also. have not heard much about the 257 roberts.

.260

Its a great round. Accurate as hell and cuts through the wind like a hot knife through butter.

Here is the one I just built. http://savageshooters.com/SavageForum/index.php/topic,30249.0.html

nice build. b&c does have a stock.

i think I'm going to get new scope. its a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 md. the scope on there now is from my rem 308.
sounds like the .260 is a popular round.

well i got the b&c stock today. what a piece of crap!!! the centerfeed mag does not fit in there. but i set the action in there anyways and the fit was not good. i had a Tactical Medalist A3 Hook on a Remington 700 that was sweet. very nice fit and finish!!! but this one was not much better than the Stevens that i took off. so I'm sending it back. i did find a deal on a Laminated heavy barrel stock at a local gun smith. 50.00 and it was mine. i was looking forward to the b&c stock. but for 50.00 i cant go wrong with that.

this is the b&c next to the Stevens stock.

The 7mm/08 is a good round and plenty of factory ammo.
