free floating 99 forend

I am working on a 99C in 284 and need help in floating the forearm. Does the O ring go around the forearm screw or around the extention the screw threads into?

It actually fits around the screw stud on the forearm, not the screw. Effectively free floating the barrel. It did wonder on my 99C in 284. It was spraying all over the target, added the O-ring and I could cover 3 shots with a dime at 50 yds.

Did your o-ring float job work? Please explain this operation further.

Adding the o ring worked good for me but, not quite a one holer. There is not much to explain, buy and o-ring from Lowes or any auto parts store. it should fit snuggly around the barrel stud. I think 1/4 or 5/16 inch is about right not where I can get to my rifles until April. Put it over the stud and screw the forearm back on. You and do a seach and maybe find photo on a Ruger #1 site same process.
