View Full Version : Feeding issue

I found that I have a feeding problem on my 12 (bind mag SF). It’s got a factory S/S varmint barrel that was 204 but, was set back and rechambered to 20 Practical.

During my load development I’d fed everything single right into the chamber. Turns out that it shoots 26g Barnes VGs really well, they’re hollow points.

I planned to take this for PDs in the Spring so, I need to load 600 of them. Before I started into that I checked my finished load to make sure that it fits into and out of the mag ok……..it doesn’t.

Polymer tipped bullets are no problem but, the hollow point Barnes hit the face of the barrel when I cycle it slow. Cycling it quickly they work fine but, I’m concerned about deforming the tip or….even worse, driving a bullet into the case.

With the volume i'll be running through it....a single feed ramp wouldn't be a good option.

A friend suggested a dap of JB Weld as a little feed ramp…….so long as I can do that without permanently gluing the barrel to the action……that seems like it might actually work.

Anyone else run into this same situation ?? How did you resolve it ??

Thanks,
Dave

Have a gunsmith or lathe handy? The small diameter cases (17 Remington, 204 Ruger, 223 Rem, etc) often need a small bevel on the mouth of the chamber to act as a feed ramp for HP bullets. It's been standard practice on M-16/AR-15 type rifles since they went into production.

I was thinking about M4 feed ramps but wasn't sure if that was viable for a bolt action as they come into battery differently than an AR.
have you even added M4 ramps to a Savage barrel ??
Does anyone have finished pics of that ??

Yep, that would do it.

Thanks.

Duh....try the simple things first.

Took the mag follower out and pulled the spring open a bit......problem solved....that was easy.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Just for the sake of answering the question, the M4 feed ramps in an AR are in the barrel extension and the upper receiver, not on the barrel breech itself, so there's no way (or reason) to adapt them to bolt guns. If you look at the photo in my previous post you'll see that the two lug slots at the bottom have been opened up. That's standard (not M4) AR feed ramps. The M4 ramps are a little deeper and would actually continue into the upper receiver a little which those in the picture don't.

Here's a photo that explains the difference between an M4 and standard AR feed ramps visually.

I had the same problem not feeding HP bullets but feeding tipped bullets..I seated the hollow point to the same olgive ie didn't change the seater die and though it is shorter col, it feeds just like the tipped bullet.
