Have a LA 200 with an A&B 338-06 barrel.

Planning to re-barrel with a 338-06AI, anything to watch out for as far as feeding from the mag well goes?

SF or CF mag?

I have found that the SF mags don't seem to like AI rounds as well if they are loaded with shorter bullets and in some cases not at all regardless of bullet. The CF mags don't seem to give any problems at all.

In your case the AI shoulder is fairly minimal considering the OD of the case vs. the dia of the bullet so I doubt you will have any major issues.

Stagger feed, I really like the idea of going to an AI but as a hunting rifle it needs to feed.

I think this will be your situation. on that case the shoulder is pretty small compared to like a 22-250AI or 243AI.

Why are you bothering with the extra reaming to make the 338-06AI? Because of the large bore of the bullet, there is only a minimal improvement in velocity and the basic 338-06 in a Savage is a powerful load - 200gr @2900 fps and 225gr@ 2750 fps.

200gr @2900? What load is that?

I'm seeing 2750 with 62gr of R17 and a 210gr Nosler.

The V7 Hornady manual says 57.3 gr of Varget behind their 200 gr SP bullet will get you 2900 in a 23-1/2 inch barrel. My own Savage 110 with a 24-inch Shaw barrel needs more than that, 60 gr of Varget to gets just over 2900 fps. as measured on the Oehler 35P. No pressure signs and very accurate.

For 225 gr SST's I use 55 gr of Varget for 2750 fps in the same rifle.

Interesting- must have a slow barrel.

Wanting to go AI just to do it, will order the barrel here in a bit, just need to get some dies and a go gauge.
