Barrel Nut Question

I found a long range hunter I am interested in that has a smooth barrel nut. All my other Savages have the standard nut. Are the threads the same so I could get the smooth nut off and put a standard nut on there or are they different and the smooth nut has to stay? This should be easy for the knowledge on this forum.
