Ok folks. I am about to become a savage shooter :D. I just got off the phone with Lisa at SSS,(very friendly person to deal with, thank you) and I have on order a timed and trued dual port action and stock.
What I dont have is the barrel.
I'd like all your input on the barrel.
I was thinking of a mcgowen 24" bull in 6mmbr.
I will be shooting from 100 to 600yrds.
Is this a good barrel? What kind of accuracy are you folks getting?
Will 24" give me good velocity for 600yrds?
I would like to keep the rifle short as possible.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for your ideas.

I think you have the makings of a very nice rifle from what you've described. I'm building a very similar rifle...using a T&T'd dual port action for a 6mm Dasher ( 6 BR improved )...but I went with a 27" MTU contour Krieger barrel for my own reasons. I have a McGowen 30" straight taper barrel on my .308 BVSS and I've been very impressed. Again...I think you're on the right path, IMHO...for what you want to build.

Good Luck,

Wayne

I had a 6BR with a Lothar-Walthar 24" 1-14 twist bull barrel. Perfect with 70 gr Ballistic Tips. For your use out to 600 yards you might want a faster twist to better stabilise the heavier bullets.

Sorry I forgot to mention the twist I wanted. I was going to go with a 1:8 for the 105's and 107's.

Don't forget the Berger 108 BT's. Can be easier to find the sweet spot and shoot as well as the 105's in 6BRX Kreiger. If you have the extra money you might want to take a look at the suggested Kreiger MTU. I just got a McGowan in .308 and I am impressed so far, so I wouldn't be afraid of one, but I sure like how my Kreiger shoots. 26 inches should be OK, and with the right contour, shouldn't be too heavy.

1-8 twist and 28" barrel will give you what you want for 600 -1000 yards.
