I just found this site and am glad to be here! :p I've been a Savage fan since high school; I bought my first one in 1964 (a Model 99EG in 250/3000, 1948 vintage) and it was brand new as it had been part of a hardware store's inventory in the San Luis Valley and had sat in the store's rack for all those years. I got it from the pawn shop in Colorado Springs that had bought the hardware store's inventory when the store went out of business. Over the years I've used it for everything from prairie dogs to elk; it is still my favorite rifle. I've been hadloading since the early '60s and have all RCBS equipment except for a Forster case trimmer. I've also got a 1956 99F in 250/3000 in mint condition that an aunt bought new. She put less than a box of cartridges through it and killed 2 deer with it (she was a farm girl and knew how to shoot) and left it to me when she passed. I've also got a 99EG in .300 Savage with a Lyman tang sight, a Model 16 in 250/3000, a 340 in 30/30 WCF and a Model 44 Stevens in .22 LR with a Lyman tang sight. I've also got other various Marlin, Savage, Stevens and Winchester rifles and some Stevens and Mossberg shotguns. As for hand guns I've collected some Ruger, S&W and H&Rs over the years. In 1965 I bought a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 and I still have it along with several others as mentioned.

I have been an NRA member since the '60s and am currently an Endowment Member. I look forward to your posts and new (to me) info on recent developments in the 'wide, wide world of (paraphrasing Slim Pickens here) firearms' !

You have an interesting story there.
Next month I will be in your area, riding thru' Cortez, where I will probably stop at a range just south of the city. Then on to Salida, and maybe thru' Rifle on a ride to Utah.

No, I never have. I do most of my shooting on BLM or Forest Service ground. The exception to that is bench-resting and sighting in; my neighbor and I have a bench-rest set up on some of his 'waste ground'.

You should check it out while you are here. It's a great range and free.

I don't get to Salida all that much (about 120 mi. one-way). I pass thru it nearly every time I head east on my way to somewhere else. I will try to remember to stop and check it out next time, though. Where is it at from, say, Wal-Mart or some such landmark?
