10FP Rebuild or Rechamber? HELP!

So I currently have a 10FP (2007) chambered in 308 that I recently discovered has a short throat (scratching bullets seated to SAMMI specs).

Option 1 - send to savage and have them fix the issue.

Option 2 - rebarrel myself and turn rifle into a .260 Rem (this is my choice for a short action, not interested in suggestions otherwise due to the fact it took me so long to decide on it HAHA).

History on rifle: currently shoots very well for a stock rifle - under MOA - with 150gr interlock Hornady Custom factory loads. Current round count is less than 200.

Curious what y'all's thoughts would be? Thanks in advance.

If you go .260 you will surely want to roll your own, the factory offerings are junk or far over priced.

Yeah won't be bothering with factory loads that's for sure.

I don't get it. What's the problem with a short throat? If you are getting the accuracy you want, why does it matter? Are there cartridges you want to shoot that won't fit? My wife is short. I like her anyhow. :)

All joking aside, what about the short throat don't you like?

I can't shoot heavy boolits bullets due to the seating depth. Hell even the 110gr VMax won't seat at book length.

I quit using specs long ago. When I acquire a new rifle, I find the lands with the pills I intend to use, back up .045 and start working out loads. Both of my Savage .308s shoot Amax's best .010 off the lands with warm loads .

Call 'em then. Hard to believe they'd cut it that shallow, but if you can't chamber Factory loads, I am sure they'll make it right.

While you're waiting for them to recut the throat, get a 260AI and a press and reloading manual. I love the cartridge and the hobby.

Talked to Savage CS today and they gave me a ball park price of up to 300 (parts and labor) for a new barrel and chambered in 260.

I think it's worth it considering a Shilen/Criterion will run 300-350 for the barrel alone.

What do y'all think?

Aftermarket. ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!

A far better barrel for the same price. Invest maybe $100 more for the action wrench and nut wrench so you can do it yourself and have a good start on a new hobby of switch barrels.

Or check with Apache Gun Works for a less expensive aftermarket 260AI around $180-200.
