Good afternoon folks,
Wanted to post a few pics of my first Savage build, and say thanks for all the great information here. I've been lurking for quite sometime, and finally got all the parts together to get a build going...it really was as easy as you all say it is. This gun is built as a tribute to my cousin John Tally of Left Hand Creek Rifles. 3 Years ago he had a stroke that left him paralyzed on the right side of his body, and he is no longer able to participate in shooting or gunsmithing. His favorite caliber is the 6.5 Swedish....so here she is...The Tally Special.

CALIBER: 6.5x55 SWEDISH
BARELL: SHILEN SELECT MATCH GRADE 26" VARMINT CONTOUR 1:8 TWIST
STOCK: SAVAGE LOW PROFILE VARMINT
ACTION: SAVAGE/STEVENS

Looks like a very nice rifle, and also very nice of you to build a tribute to your cousin.
What optics are you planning on using with it?

Thanks! I'm not sure yet. I've always liked Burris and Leupold, but the Vortex stuff looks interesting as well. I still have a few things I wanna do to it...change out the bolt handle, cerakote the receiver, but overall I'm very pleased with how this went together...Jim Briggs was a huge help with this...great guy. I am already planning a .257 Roberts build!

I see you're in Texas...so am I. I live in a little bitty town called Waring about 60 miles north of San Antonio up in the Hill Country.

Very nice.
Check out the bushnell elite series scopes as well, if you have not.
I have bean leaning toward the 6.5 sweed for my next one as well and could always use more data....... In other words: Would love to see what she can do when she's done.

Haha...thanks for the kind words guys. I was very fortunate, as Jim Briggs had this one stock left for sale. My understanding is there are no more low profile varmints in a blind magazine long action anywhere to be had. I had been looking for a wood LA stock that fit my tastes for over a year. I'm gonna send the action off to Nat Lambeth for some bolt lift work, then cerakote the receiver matte black, as the bluing on the Stevens stuff is mediocre at best.
As far as the 6.5 Swede round is concerned, my aforementioned cousin was a HUGE proponent of that cartridge for Whitetail hunting. He always said it was the best compromise of all things, and from what I've read I tend to believe it...those 6.5 bullets have some serious mojo. Speaking of I'm really interested to see what this new 26 Nosler can do. According to the website:
The 26 Nosler® cartridge was designed to take advantage of the inherently accurate and high B.C. 6.5mm (.264) caliber bullets, and is capable of shooting the Nosler® 129 grain, AccuBond® Long Range™ bullet at a blazing 3400 fps out of the muzzle. Zeroed at 350 yards, the 26 Nosler® has a Point Blank Range of 0-415 yards. Loaded with the 129gr ABLR, the26 Nosler® retains as much velocity at 400 yards as the 260 Remington® produces at the muzzle. The 26 Nosler® case is non-belted, thus headspaced off of the shoulder to further enhance accuracy. The “26” also utilizes a standard (30-06) length action meaning shorter bolt-throw and lighter weight than magnum length actions. “I really feel the 26 Nosler® has great value amongst the large family of 6.5mm cartridges. With minimal recoil, tremendous velocity, energy and the ability to point and shoot at the intended target up to a quarter mile away, this is the quintessential deer, antelope and long-range target cartridge available on the market today.” –Bob Nosler, CEO/President Nosler, Inc.
