I see people on here talking about 300,400,500,even 600 yard shots. That seems like some long shots for .223 cal. What kind of groups do yoU get at these ranges and how much bullet drop?I'd like to see some pictures if anyone has any.
THANKS JEFF

Hello Jeff:

Have a look at this article.

http://www.longrangehunting.com/articles/shooting-223-mile-1.php

Don't count the .223 out for going the distance.

When I was in the Army I had a M16 modiified DMR. I shot out to targets at 600 meters with no big problem at all using the issued Mk 262 77grn round. That was with a military rifle (pretty accurate one though) and a 4x ACOG.

A good bolt gun like a 10FP with a high powered scope and good ammo would have no problem at 600 yards.

I've done 2" groups with factor ammo at 200 yards. With match ammo, I can hit a clay at 300 yards, then hit the pieces of the clay one more time. I took it to 500 yards but only on a 15" metal gong. Once I figured it took some 25+ inches of holdover, hitting the gong was a sinch. This was with 52gr bullets. With heavier bullets, 500 yards is well within the accuracy range of .223 remmington, IMO.

On a calm day I shoot about 1"-1.5" groups at 300 yards, shooting caps off of juice containers. 600 yards it shoots about 1MOA or 6". The .223 is shot regularly out to 1000 yards and beyond. The 80grn .223 is almost identical to the 155grn 308 with the 90grn VLD beating anything a 308win can dish out.

Go to the JBM websight and input your numbers and it will give you a range card that will be pretty close. You will need to know your velocity and BC for the bullet that you are shooting.

my particular rifle will hold 1 moa to 400, soemtimes 500, all depends on the conditions. at 600 its more like 2moa. but i only shoot 55vmaxes, fmjs, and other cheap bullets out of it.

my fired dope is

200yd - +2 moa
300yd - +3.5
400yd - +7
500yd - +11
600yd - +16
700yd - +25

Not quite MOA...I dropped a shot. But, this WAS in the wind. :) (my excuse)

55 gr softpoints - the bulk flavor from MidSouth, will shoot under 12" at 700 yards...with NO sorting, etc...just ran through the Dillon and loaded a bunch of them up.

People shoot service rifle matches with M16s and AR15s at Camp Perry out to 1,000 yards.

British and Australian shooters go out to 1,100 or 1,200 yards with .223 bolt guns with long (30") barrels.

dcloco thats impressive...have u chronyed ur loads? what twist/length barrel u usin? all the 55s ive tried seem to get swatted outta the air somewhere after 600. watchin the trace they just die, or spin out. some will hit our 700yd gong(12x16), most wont. im shootin a stevens bbl cut w a short throat, 1-9 twist. holds 1 moa 500 and in

I cheat...make your chamber a 223 AI and you can go to 800 with the cheap 55's in a 1:9 twist factor Savage barrel. 55's at 36xx will go to 800...but start tumbling and are erratic after that. At 1500 yards....the group opens to 25 to 30 YARDS (not kidding).
