Wondering if this is something that would be useful as an Elk gun. It seems to me, that the 21 3/4" barrel on the Safari Model 116 would not be long enough for a .300 RUM to reach full speed. Trouble is, I have a Savage 111 7mm RUM with large shank action/barrel and a controlled feed bolt head. I also have a stainless 116 "Safari" model barrel with brake chambered for .300 RUM. I don't shoot 7mm, more a .30 cal fan and would live to have a .300 RUM. But, will this gun shoot accurately with that barrel length?

Yes it would be accurate, and you would still end up sending them faster than a 308, 30-06, or 300 WM, I would do the swap.

Dean Sort of what I'm thinking. By the way, love that quote!

Go check Numerich (http://www.gunpartscorp.com), they were selling new factory 300 RUM barrels for under $90 last time I checked in a couple of different lengths and contours.

I think I'll put what I have together and see how it shoots. Then, if it needs a different barrel, I can always invest in a Shilen or Shaw

Whats-a-matter Dean? Couldn't find something like a 28" twist? LOL. ;)

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I will be watching to see what you will pull off stabilizing in that 17".

I built and help develop for a guy a 30-338 Lapua, it started out as a 30BR 17 twist, they were popular at one point, anyway we rechambered it and were sending 168gr @ over 4000 fps, and the 150s were unreal, but the real eye opener were those Barnes 130 TTSXs OMG they were Insane, so I intend to duplicate that rounds performance, if not one up it.

Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll have 8957636585.9 grains of powder behind it.
