savage 10 throat question

so using hornady OAL gauge and bullet comparator for 175gr SMK bullet in 308
i got 2.779 OAL and 2.208 Ogive. is this too short? I know i can't fire 175 SMK due to this, haven't try 168gr yet.
should i contact savage let them take care of it?

If you wish to stick with heavier bullets like the 175 grain, I would have a local gunsmith throat the barrel for the longer bullets.

I'm not following why you "can't fire" the SMK's? Just seat them deeper.

because i dont do reload, and even if i do i need seat it .04ish deeper would that create excessive pressure or something else?
currently i just shot factor ammo

It is a pendulum. To a point, the deeper you seat bullets, the less pressure you will have because of the bullet jump. It allows gas to escape around and prior to the bullet engraving in the lands. However you can also get to a point of powder compression that really monkeys with burning rates.

Never even heard of such a thing before i started reloading . i guess you are past due to get a press and some dies. :)

guess so, but its ok to reload bullet deeper, for example base on my rifle OAL for 175smk to work, i need load to something like 2.76ish OAL, thats fine?

If you can't chamber a factory round in a factory chamber something is wrong with the way that chamber is/was cut. A factory model 10 will have a 10 twist barrel and should come throated for anything up to about a 200 grain bullet. Better have a look in the chamber. It could be a burr messing with your measurements.

i send the rifle back to savage before due to same issue, they say they polish the chamber. 168gr or lower gr fire is ok, just not the 175smk. the ogive for the 175 federal gmm is a bit longer.
savage seem has alot short throat issue, i didn't expect my 10 is 2.77 OAL. since i will reloading eventually(newb here), not sure if i seat to 2.76 or less for 175smk is ok. if not ill will send back to savage for barrel replace or re-throated. I like to have my rifle fire 180gr or below without seating the bullet too deep(not sure thats an issue or not). if some expert reloader think seating bullet in 2.76 OAL or less is ok, ill just keep it, since it fire 168gr FGMM under moa.

If you are going to reload, your issue can be solved by going to a faster burn rate powder, which you use less of, allowing you to seat long bullets deeper in the case, allowing a COAL that works with your chamber throat. There are a huge number of powders that work with the 308 :-))

Listen to Earl 39. 10's and 12's should be within +/- .002-.003 of 2.800 on a 175 SMK in 308. Brass around 2.005.
