Ok so got some shooting in today my intent was to determine what my max charge would be with this powder shooting a Hornady 154 sst. Alliant listed a 51.5 gr of RL 17 for a 160 gr speer as max with a velocity of 2825ish. so with all the research I've done with all the different manuals and forums and articles 280 Rem load data is very conservative. so I concluded that there isn't much difference with a 270 win as far as H20 capacity and powder capacity. so I kind of went with it.

RL 17 154 SST max charge test velocity test

51.5 gr 2925 2920 2923
52.0 gr 2935 2961 2953
52.5 gr 2971 2974 2984
53.0 gr 3022 2993 3011
53.5 gr 3020 3041 3051
54.0 gr 3046 3064 3068
54.5 gr 3092 3081 3080
55.0 gr 3113 3141 3116
55.5 gr 3146 3139 3144
56.0 gr 3167 3163 3162 first sign of pressure.

All in all it grouped ok nothing spectacular but as you can see with the spreads there some potential. this is my first savage so not use to the rifle basix trigger. I've been shooting custom remmy's The trigger is no where near the jewel triggers that I'm use to. I will eventually get use to it with more trigger time and load development.

I'm finishing up a 280 now with the same barrel and stock you're using. The plan is to start with H4831 and the 162 AMAX because I have some on hand already.

with these numbers I'm thinking of trying out some 168 berger vld hunting which is what I'm using on my 7REM MAG 3050 fps with 69.7 gr of H1000.

Those are on my list to try also if the AMAX doesn't do it for me.
