budget target gun ?

Hi new here , im wanting to build a new target gun . I only shoot 100 - 300 yards , but im looking to go with a 243 , 7 mm 08 , or some kind of 6 mm. I have pictured a mod 10 action, with a straight taper barrel in a richards micro fit marksman style stock. Thay say on the website thay inlet for savage 10. But iv been told on mod 10 that there is a difference in screw spacing from older ones and newer ones. Or are all mod 10s the same.

Screw spacings are different on older models than the newer ones either 4.27" or 4.4"

My suggestion would be the 6mmBr. It pretty much dominates bench rest shooting and is easy to load for easy to shoot and is super efficient. Plus it just plain works. Pick a barrel with a twist that best matches your style of shooting and have fun.

A good source for used actions is this site... get a $15 membership andyou'll have access to great articles and classifieds. Might get one for $250 or so. They come available often.

I too drank the 6BR Kool-Aid and it tasted good. It just plain works. But I also find myself walking to the beat of a different drummer most of the time. If you reload, a 243AI is fun, easy, and gets you a bit more zip than the 6BR. As you can tell from my signature I am a fan of the 6mm stuff so go with any 6mm and you will be happy I think. Lots of different bullets to choose from top quality match stuff to cheap plinking/varmint bullets. Nothing wrong with the 6BR, it will serve you well, but if you don't handload you may be better served with a 243.

i also wanted to add a "target" type varmint rifle to my gun closet, for out to about 300 yards or so. i already have a .45-70gov't, .30-06, .308win, .243win, and wanted something in the diminutive varmit category. was thinking along the lines of some .22 flavor, but i did my research and just ordered a 12fv in .204 Ruger, along with a boyd's thumbhole laminated stock. strictly handloading, as i do for all my other rifles and handguns. should be fun, at least ...

If you reload, don't overlook the 6mmPPC. (Although I hear they make factory ammo?) Plenty of brass to be had from reformed 7.62x39. If you are a factory ammo shooter, 243 can't be beat. Check out this article I found on the 6mm:

If you want something a little more exotic, (although 6.5mm) maybe a 260 Remington which seems to be making a popularity comeback. Maybe a 6.5 creedmore? 6.5 Grendel?

all depends on the level of "target" shootin' ya wanna do, and how much money/time to devote also plays a big part of the rifle purchase decision. the 6br is a classic cartridge, for sure. i like 243win and really intrigued by the 6.5 creedmore, and components for both of those are a snap to acquire and load. my choice woud be ... if not hand loading, .243win, - and 6.5 creedmore is yer rolling yer own. it's all good. :cool:
