I have an older savage 110 in 223. Its a long action. But the magazine is short action length. Apparently savage only made long actions for awhile. I have been wanting to build a 6.5-06 and figured this rifle was good to go. But I looked carefully and I'd have to clearance the mag well and find a long action magazine box. Anybody ever dealt with a caliber change in one of these early savages?

If you become a paid member there's a complete rifle for sale in the classifieds in 6.5-06. He just finished the build did load developement and it's ready to go. I'll be building one on a 116 action in a few months myself.

To answer your question though, If you have a true M110 action and not a M10 action then you should be able to change out the blind magazine to the same you would use for a 30-06 and be good to go.

You could use a mill and open up the short magazine length to the standard one, but I think it would be more advantageous just to pick up another action with the proper mag opening in this case.

If you are close I would trade you a long action ready to go. (Kansas)

The key thing is trying to find a long action .223 bolt head. I wasn't able to find one so I had to use a short action to get a .223 bolt head which are a lot more common that the long action .223 bolt head.

Edit: sorry I guess I got it backwards, a long action .473 bolt head should be readily available.

It's my 6.5-06 for sale. Thanks for the plug Lonewolf. As for your action you will need to open up the receiver to accommodate a center feed L/A magazine. You can easily convert any stagger feed to a centerfeed as long as you make sure the magazine height is correct. Any local company with a mill can do this for you or you can try it with a dremel if your brave. Better to just sell the action and get what you want.

My rifle for sale only has about 60 rounds through it. It's wicked accurate and shoots smooth. I'm just a caliber whore who always wants to try something else. I build them, work them up, shoot them and sell them. Rinse and repeat! PM me if you want info on 6.5-06 loads. I have some for sale too!
