I was surprised to find it as it was a display among many rifles without a tag to identify make and caliber (tags can't be read unless a clerk brings the gun over the counter--not the best way to display a huge number of rifles but the Indian Head on the pistol grip did help). The .250 story was told to me by my grandfather who had a friend in college who had bought a 99 in the .250. He told me the 3000fps story with the 87 gr bullet and how that rifle had "turned a coyote inside out" in from of my grandfather's eyes on a running shot 75 or so yards away in a ravine bed they had been combing back in the Roaring Twenties. I knew all about the cartridge and had a 6mm 700 ADL but all the time I wanted a .250 and finally in 1985 I bought a 700 Classic .250 in Petaluma, CA of all places!

Ergonomically the 700 Classic Series does not do well for me to shoot accurately. The pistol grip is almost non existent and the trigger is too far forward for me to really get down to brass tacks with it. I gave up on the 700 and got a Ruger 77 International in the same caliber (Ruger had this for awhile in the early 90s). That rifle was better but again not the right feel for me to split hairs with so I sold it and waited for another model .250 Savage and I found my 14 just about two months ago in St. Louis, MO. It feels good! It looks good. It balances good. I love it. I haven't fired it yet but I did mount a Swar Z3 3-9X on it (I know the scope cost more than the rifle) and I am happy as a pig in poop!

I will post pictures soon! I will fire it soon! I picked up 140 rounds from Remington (100gr SP).

You lucky devil. Those are beautiful rifles and in a great caliber. I have three of these that I have built on 10/110 actions. One for me one for the wife and one for the nephew. You can could say the 250 savage is my favorite caliber. Works wonders on yotes and deer and my 11 year old nephew even tackled an elk last year with his at 200 yards. Great cartridge.

It's a great caliber...I have 2 99's in 250 Sav and am in the process of turning a 11THXP in 7-08 into one for my daughter...

Oh I know the .250 Model 14 would be the last rifle and caliber I'd part with. It truly is a versatile cartridge for varmints and deer. I've heard of Elk stories with the .250, .257 Roberts, .25-06, and .257WBY. From what I've gleaned Elk is the limit at reasonable range for a .250. I have read of .38-55 and many .30-30 stories as well. Given the history of calibers used on Elk since Elk have been in North America I'd use a .250 and be in the actual middle of the boat in terms of power. More Elk have been harvested using calibers like .30-30 instead of 7mm Mag or 300 Mag.

a 250 AND a Mdl 14 are both on my bucket list. Have looked at both a lot. But didn't know the 14 came in 250! Very nice! I also would like a 257 Bob

As soon as I load up some snaps I will include my .25 cal rifle battery all together at once:
1. Remington 700 CDL .257 Wby Mag 26" bbl blued fluted (NOT stainless!) Scope: Trijicon Accupoint RED 3-9X 40mm
2. Savage 14 .250 Savage Scope: Swarovsky Z3 3-9X

In my time I could have taken photos of all the .25 rifles I have had history with and that would include the .25-06, .257 Roberts. That covers them all. I have words to say about what I've learned in my experience with owning and shooting and reloading for all these .25 calibers.
.250 - The most efficient .25 and most likely the most efficient cartridge itself for the most broadest applications! It is inherently accurate.
.257 Roberts - Really nice moderate yet efficient ME for a .25 bullet. The most inaccurate .25 rifle in any action in my experience.
.25-06 - The pleasing cartridge no matter what intent for the cartridge. High velocity, accurate, loud and authoritative, hardly any recoil.
.257 Weatherby Magnum - Wicked. Accurate. Powerful. Concussion muzzle blast. Laser. Seemingly instantaneous velocity from primer punch to target punch. Punches cantalope entry and exit diameter damage to deer weight mammals. Fastest long range shooter extant in commercial cartridge production.

Sav250....you musta had a bad 257 Roberts...as they are widely known for their accuracy...I too am a quarterbore nut and have several 25's ....my current collection includes:

250-3000 Savage 99 Takedown (1930's)...was my great grandmothers and made a trip to Africa in the late 1930's for the first of 2 safari's she took that rifle on...we have several pictures with her and that rifle (and another 99 in 300 sav that my brother has) with many kills...

250Sav Savage 99 Model EG with an aftermarket barrel...shoots lights out and is my daughters hunter for next year...wears a Nikon ProStaff 3-9x50 in Warne Bases and Millett rings

250Sav Savage 99 Model R...99% original (1940's)...killed one of my first deer with this rifle

257 Roberts Ackley Improved custom build on a blueprinted Remington 700 (lefty) (pic attached)....it wears a Lilja #3 Stainless 1:10 twist barrel cut at 24" and bead blasted and floated with a matching custom muzzle break; Shilen Custom Rifle Trigger; custom recoil lug; pillar bedded and glass bedded....shoots 1/4 MOA...it currently wears a Nikon Monarch 4-16x50SF in Warne Rings and bases...

257 Roberts Remington 700 BDL (started life as a left handed 270, swapped factory Remington barrel onto it that was cut to 20" and recrowned...other than that it is bone stock rifle)...it will shoot 1/2 MOA all day long....wears an older Lupy vs iii in 3-9x40

25WSSM Browning A-Bolt Medallion....sweet shooter...shoots the light bullets real nice and is a great yote rifle....currently wearing a Bushnell 3200 Elite in 4-24x50 in Warne rings and bases

I have had several 25's that have some and gone...the 257 Bob is still my favorite rifle...as a lefty, I have had to have all my Bob's built...this AI is a labor of love and it probably the best shooting rifle I have ever owned...http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/28/y7adypab.jpg

I went back and looked... I can't find that the 14 was originally chambered in 250 Sav. Fair to assume it was rechambered/rebarrelled? No matter, just morbidly curious!

emt,

I know there are Roberts guys who love theirs and they are happy with their accuracy. However, I would say given a choice between .25 06 and .257 Roberts the former would edge out the famous Bob for accuracy in an even world.

Oscar,

When I found the 14 I did research and sure enough it was a run of production rifles in .250 Savage. What makes it more interesting is Savage will give you a 10 or 110 in your choice of caliber with very little extra cost. It is almost as if Savage has a custom shop to give you what you want!

Serial number on mine is H277991 with box showing same. It had been in the store for a few years unnoticed because the gun tag on the trigger guard was hidden like all the other rifle tags and one had to get a clerk to one by one check out the calibers of the rifles and if you wanted NIB untouched or not racked they would go back into the back room and look. This 14 was all they had left but it is brand new.

PS.

When the clerk saw it was .250 he was surprised. He was older and we started talking about old cartridges from classic days. He liked the .250 and told me seeing one today was like finding a gem in a desert with a cold glass of clear water.

OK - I am an idiot! I was thinking REMINGTON Model 14 PUMP gun in 250 Savage!!! DUH!!! Yours is a SAVAGE!!! What a novel concept! Been looking for/at Rem Mdl 14 pumps, and then saw your post. Mind just didn't shift the gears!

Either way, BOTH are on my bucket list! A Rem Mdl 14, AND a 250 Savage. Would love the 250 Sav in a Savage 99. It would go GREAT with my two 99s in 300 Sav and 284 Win (an old ugly TX truck gun, but it IS a 284 Win!!!)! And that mdl 14? A 35 Rem, of course! Keep my Marlin 336 35 Rem good company!

Forgot to add the magazine is detachable and centerfeed.

On the magazine it says "Use only caliber stamped on the barrel." Well. That's a great help!
