Colleagues: awhile back I can across a mint Savage M170 in 30-30 with a vintage Weaver 3.5 X 'scope. Rifle is probably 90% and I jumped on it even though I really didn't need another .30-30. But then again when dealing with .30-30 rifles, like the .45-70, is it possible too have too many??

Fun little rifle to shoot, except for the atrocious trigger -- very heavy. Does anyone have any idea how to improve the functioning of this trigger?

A Fellow Shooter said one must be careful when working on these triggers otherwise slam firing can occur.

Thanks for any information. Cheers and all the best, rcN

You may get more responses if this were posted in the CENTERFIRE threads.

But yes, the trigger can be improved upon with very little work using Hard Arkansas stones. Remove any burs off the sides, edges, and holes, but NEVER in the sear area. Use a good lube on all mating surfaces, and do not modify the springs. Keep them in their original condition, replace them if you need a lighter spring. Remember metal cannot be added back on very easily.
