What's the thread pattern on a factory savage barrel?
Is it 5/8"x 24 or 28?

Somebody refresh my feeble and ever failing memory.

This is for a .308 barrel, by the way...

I should probably write that down somewhere. It's one of those numbers I don't use too often and always forget if it's 24 or 28.

Trouble is if I write it down. I'll probably lose the paper I wrote it on....

The other threads, i.e. common AR-15 type, is 1/2x28

Ok which Savage barrel are we talking about here?

Most of the heavier barrels from Savage are either 1/2"-28-RH for rimfire stuff and .224 cal stuff and 5/8"-24-RH for anything bigger.

The factory barrels setup for the Adjustable Brake that turns on/off are threaded 9/16"-28-RH which is a Savage proprietary thread.

Frank, if you are wondering what your 30-06 barrel (that I sold you) is, I had it threaded 5/8"-24-RH.

EDIT: just saw you said this is for a 308. If its a heavy varmint/bull barrel then it should be 5/8"-24-RH and if a Sporter or Magnum taper barrel with the on/off brake then 9/16"-28-RH.

Actually, it's for a couple fat barrels I have that need threading for brakes. One is heavy / truck axle, the other varmint (muzzle at .710") I 'spose.

I want to have them done like my beloved 30.06 - the barrel I got from you. I just can't ever seem to remember the TPI number. I always want to call the 24 tpi a 28 for some reason. Must be another age related thing.

In the mean time, I wrote 5/8"x24 in big black numbers on a stickie note and stapled it to the inside of my parts cabinet door. Now I'll probably forget its there...

LOL. That sounds like something I would do. In fact it is, I still have a couple of items that I put in a real safe place as to not loose them. Now if I can just remember where that safe place was.

I like finding stuff I stashed a few years earlier and can't recall when or where I got it from.
Lately that seems to be happening a lot.

Well I have awhile before I make it to the "Golden Years", but I can totally see your point on that one.

I too enjoy finding those hidden treasures. I got out a jacket that I had not worn in a couple years for no apparent reason. Started digging around in the pockets and found a folded up $100 bill in the inside pocket. I normally keep close track of my cash, still to this day I have no idea how it got in there and how I forgot about it. I suppose I was having what my mother once called a "Senior Moment" a bit prematurely.
