Is there a place anyone knows of that I can buy a long action receiver set up like they sell for the short actions on the SA website? I wanna build my own 338 lapua.

I would give Northland Shooter Supply. Jim may be able to set you up with everything you need.

The Savage .338 Lapua is built on a dedicated action just for that caliber. A standard long action is not strong enough. If you are really serious about a .338 Lapua, build it on a Stiller Tac 338 action.

pat, if you arent totally dead set on the lapua, the 338 edge is a pretty suitable replacement that you dont need a different action for.

A fully built 338 was posted in the classifieds yesterday. Should become a paid member and check it out.

Thanks for the advice guys. I am not dead set on the 338 Lapua as the platform but I am interested in some shooting that will be going out further than my .308 in progress build will be able to go. That being said the .308 will probably be my normal go to lets have fun range banger since im getting SSA 175 match ammo for $7.20/box more at my gun shop than what I can get hunting ammo with at the local Wally World. as far as becoming a paid member the Ms' gave me a hell of a look when I even mentioned that lol. I'm about to get out of the Marine Corps so we're being a little chincy with our money until my next job has given me a few checks.

Thanks for your service!! How far are you planning to go? There are a lot of "simple" chamberings that will stomp a 308 that are cheaper and easier to put together than a big horsepower 338... Some great 6.5's, the 7mag, 300wsm, and lots more.

I can shoot my 338edge with sierra bullets 8-9 times for the cost of 10 in my 300wsm using berger bullets. Despite berger's great design in heavy 30 cal........338 still flat stomps it. Then when things get rolling you spring for some bergers in 338 and stomp the sierra etc, etc.
338 edge is most practically a single shot in a savage but if you really want to stretch it out to extreme range it is a great option for a standard long action or even a short target action single shot.
Nothing against the great 6.5's, 7mm's or 30cal mags but once you start buying high quality long range bullets suitable for them the cost of the next step up is very small.

I'm currently building a 338 RUM on a standard long action. I had a hankering for a larger caliber, and was able to pick up all the components for the RUM pretty cheap. Plus, I had a standard long action around, so I figured what the heck. Just waiting on the barrel.
