I realize that the Receiver Screw hole spacing on the Single Shot Receivers ((Model 12F and F/TR) has changed to 4.40 " from what use to be 4.25" (?), correct?

Did Savage move the forward hole farther toward the face of the receiver to accomplish this? I dont think that the rear hole could have been moved rearward because of the trigger mechanism.

The rear screw is still in the same spot, and is used as reference to other machining operations. The front was moved forward when the center feed magazine systems came out, to make clearance for the mag latch.

The F/TR is built on the Precision Target Action. The originals were spaced 4.40" and some of the newer PTA's are spaced 3.44" IIRC.

Savage did have some single shot receivers that were regular actions with no mag cut out, prior to the PTA's introduction to the Savage lineup. I have one in SS in a 4.27" spacing.
Regular short actions did change from 4.27" to 4.40" with the introduction of the Centerfeed magazines just as Sharpshooter said, but the PTA started life at 4.40" and the PTA is what the 12-F and 12 F/TR are built on.

Fred please correct me if I am wrong.

The only actions spaced to 3.44 were the Palma, (basically a PTA right bolt ,right port) and the benchrest dual port. However... there are some *******ized actions floating around. You might find a dual port action in the 4.4 and left ports in the 3.44. I have gotten them both ways, and most of the time they came with the wrong trigger guard. I've had a few customers that have run into problems when they received their actions and found that it wasn't the same as the stock they ordered.....so be sure to measure.
