I am entering the world of long range shooting (800-1800m) and am looking for a scope to do the job. I have a Leupold VX2 4x12x50 but its not cutting it. Any recommendations as to powers I should be looking for? Also, I need the scope to have turrets I can move by finger tip and also have mil dot sighting. Any suggestions of good scopes that fir this criteria besides the obvious (Nightforce, Zeiss, etc)?

SWFA makes affordable tactical scopes with excellent internal mechanics, etc.

I regularly shoot out past 1000 with my Vortex viper PST 6-24-50. Best bang for your buck at $750 for the SFP model. Come in MRAD and MOA with their excellent EBR reticle and a zero stop. Great glass. Actually 16 power is plenty as anything more and mirage is a real issue. I regularly dial down to 16-20 when the mirage gets bad.

you are military, so register with promotive. they have discounts on schmidt n bender of up to 50 percent off, and also had some great deals on some of the bushnell tactical elites. the sightron 10-50 is also a highly regarded scope for long range targets.

Leupold's new VX-6 7-42x56mm. I dont think its out yet, but it seems like its been very well received among the F-class community in testing. I have the 4-24 and absolutely love it. It's crisp, clear and really bright! And at a fraction of the cost of a comparable Zeiss or Sworo.

I believe NF has a new scope below the $1K mark. Also Leupy now has the VX-8.......

The Sightron 10-50X should get the job done.

Try the sightron 6-24 or 8-32 scopes. I'm a Leupold guy for the most part, but I have a sightron SIII 8-32x56 that works great.

I have to admit though, I typically use a VX-3 6.5-20x50 set on 12x for 1000-1300 yards. It has a Premier reticles mil dot and M1 turrets. My next favorite is the MK 4 8.5-25x50 with the TMR reticle and m5 turrets. That one is usually set around 16x

rule of thumb 1x per 100 yards (unless shooting f class stuff). budget?

Huh?

So a good 3x9 should pretty much cover anything shy of 1000 yards? That does not sound right to me.

Enlighten me on the Leupold/Premier connection Andrew.
Years back Premier was a certified repair facility for Leupold. They also did custom reticles in leupold scopes.
However when Dick Thomas died, and his son took the helm of Premier, he took it in an entirly different direction.
For a brief period there was a Shmidt & Bender connection, but scope manufacturing under the Premier name became the sole business.
It appeared as though the bridge to Leupold was burned beyond repair. I make no attempt to stay abreast of whats happening at Premier,
but apperently things have changed?

I think it looks more like $200/100yards, maybe.

The scope I have is an older conversion it's a shame that they don't do the work still. The mildot that they put in here is the only mildot reticle I've ever cared for.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. Your right, they did excellant work and it's unfortunate their services are no longer available.
Back before knobs were available on scopes, we had Dick install dots set at various distances. Typical would be 100 yds to 1000 yds
in 100 yd spacings. They were cartridge specific including b c and velocity. I dont know how in hell he did that as computers werent
really being used yet. But do it he did and they were very accurate. Im still using them in a few of my scopes.
Dicks father Bob started that buisness after ww2. He had been working on bomb sights during the war and used that knowledge to start
a small scope repair buisness after the war.
