I am looking to purchase my first bolt action rifle and have a limited budget. Purpose will be mostly target shooting, 200-500 yard range, with possibly some hunting. I am looking at the Axis SR or the Axis Heavy Barrel in .308. I like the 20" threaded barrel on the SR, but wish it was a heavy barrel. The Heavy barrel model is 22", a little longer than I originally wanted. Price is basically the same. Any opinions?

I would question it seeing as how there's no pictures available.

Also shows they're all Out of Stock.

I google the part number though and Cheaper than Dirt shows them too, but also with no picture. Might call Savage with the number and see what they say.

Found them on Gunbroker too, but again, no pics. I emailed the seller asking for some, and barrel dimensions.

Thanks for the information. I may give Savage a call today if I get some time at work.

Judging by the response of the new thread, it seems the heavy barrel will be the way to go. By the time I am ready to buy, stock may be available. Thanks for posting the information.

That's why I'd do if I was buying one now.

I just bought an Axis XP in 308 and am quite satisfied with it...considering your price range I would say just buy a plain Axis and get a nicer scope for it (mine came with a Bushnell 3x9)
