Now that we know that your loads are ok,lets talk about your front rest and rear bag.Could you tell us what you are shooting off ? Does the gun return to zero when fired or do you have to continually readjust to make the next shot.If the gun jumps then we can explore ways to cure it.

Here a picture (or video) is worth 1,000 words. My 15 year old son is doing the shooting in the matches and testing, I do the loading and all the prep. He keeps it on target pretty well after the shot.

I'm more and more convinced it's the bullet I was using.

Ive seen 1-12tw. barrels do outstanding with lighter projectiles 150/155.
My 10 FCP-HS-5R 24" 11.25twist gives me .25moa @ 100 (with 150smk) and flys nice and tight out to 1k easily even in 20mph winds. Ive shot against shooters who were shooting 168a-max-168-175 SMK and when all was said and done, I only had to adj. 1moa more for windage compaired to there weight of pill at 1K distance.
I truely believe that you might be spot on on your evaluation.
Nothen better than to watch your off spring enjoying our 2nd amend.
he looks nice and steady
I surely miss having my son around on shooting sundays.

I have a 7mm08 with a 1 to 11 inch twist rate and it doesn't like anything over 140 grain in Nosler at all.

Most all twist rate charts show you'd need a 1:10 twist in a 7mm-08 in order to properly stabilize a 140g class bullet....

Update:

Got some 155 Scenars to test. Was not the best conditions to test in, but was eager to see how they compared to the 175 SMK under same conditions.
So here is what I found out. All shots were done at 500 yards. I shot a pretty common 155 Scenar load and seated them at .010 variance just to start. Also shot the 175 SMK load that had worked well in another rifle. I chrono'd the rounds and got avg 2956 and ES 9.

Even in a 16 MPH wind that switched from full value from the right to behind me, the Scenar's loaded .030" jump shot about 1/2 size the group of the 175's. Guess that's what we are using next time out and see how they actually shoot in a match. Doing a 600 yard FT/R in a few weeks.

I did have the barrel looked at at there is some chatter on the lands. If I can get through the rest of the year w/ some decent results (or better than before) I will re-barrel over winter.

This is my son's gun and he is having a blast shooting in some matches. Just wish I would have looked into this earlier as I feel partly responsible for his performance with this rifle so far.

Thanks for the comments/feedback.

Yes, live and learn. I took someones word that it shot 175's well.

Ordered the Scenars today. Will report back how they shoot.

Idid the same. My shooting buddy insisted 175s were best for my Rem 700 w/1:12. Got fed up & changed to Nosler 168 CC & never looked back. 2 for 3 last wek at 1000 on a 12" plate.

Update:

It was the bullet. Today my 15 year old son shot his best score ever so far w/ the new load. The vertical was great. He kicked my butt and once I get him a better bipod, hopefully scores even better.

Awesome, glad to hear that you've found a bullet that performs.

Your gun and load aside......

The thing you'll always remember is the time you spent with your boy.....

Happened with me what seems along time ago......

Just got scores today. He won 1st place Jr F/TR, which I knew he did well. What really shocked me was, he scored 4th overall in F/TR.

He shot a 571-10X off a Harris bipod.

I'm a proud Dad today!

LOL. How did the 300 Winchester mag on lane 5 sound in the pits?

We were on #8. Did not sound much different from where I was standing. However, would of hated being the person laying next to him. Did not know someone was shooting a 300WM.

Someone over there hit the spotting disk and it made a hell of a noise!

It was Regan that shot the spotter. She got 21 Xs for the day. The guy next to us was shooting the 300 and he was not enjoying it.

Tempest, I was wondering what retical your son's Nightforce has and do you guys like it.

It's the CH2. Just a very fine reticle. I bought that one because I only planned on using it for 600 and 1,000 F/TR. He likes it a lot.

I felt bad last year when we first started this, we had a budget scope. He was being coached by a friend of mine and the guy says, now hold to the outside left side of the X ring. My son looks up and said, "Dad I can't even see the X ring, I'm just guessing where that is".

That made me buy a new scope. :)
