I am wanting to build a .338 lapua just for fun.. I don't want anything tactical looking just a normal hunting gun. Is this even possible and if so what is needed to do this?

.338 RUM. It's a .338 Lapua without the headache.

This about sums it up.

Ditto. Cost to reload a 338 RUM is: 0.50 per 300 gr SMK (if ou buy the 500 count box), brass, primer, and almost 100 grains of powder. Cost to reload 338 Lapua is double or triple because of the cost of brass.

Think .338-06. Impressive ballistics without the high cost. Make brass from surplus 30-06 brass. My Whelen which is a 30-06 necked up to .35 caliber is pretty economical to load I can hunt just about anything on this continent even though it isnt a 3000 FPS whiz-bang. 2500FPS with 250 gr bullets, 2750 with 200. 225 is my next load try. Why abuse the body and wallet?

I actually had the same question, wanting to stay away from the Lapua and wanted to go the 338 Edge Route, Necking up 300 RUM's. Can this be done in a savage action? What about the New 110 BA in 300 Win Mag, have it rebarreled to 338 Edge, 5 round magazine??

My .338 EDGE is built on a 7mm mag 110 Action, is a Repeater with 3.850 OAL

Savage 110 (7 mm mag action)
Stockade Prairie Dog /tactical stock
30" Shillen select match 1:10 barrel with Brake
Warne steel base
Leupold Mark4 LR 4.5-14 X 50 M1
Burris Extreme Rings
SSS Trigger
SSS Recoil Lug
Rebuilt box mag to feed up to 3.890 OAL rounds.

I went the Edge route on this 8 pound format because of those things mentioned. Economy of reloading. Did not have to change the bolthead and everything was American ingenuity.

Ace, That is great info, thanks... A couple of questions, is that an internal box magazine, is it possible to use a detachable box magazine with new bottom metal of course and use the 338 Edge in Savage Actions? Does yours eject loaded cartridges or do you have to pull the bolt or is there not a Savage action that you don't have to pull the bolt on?

Thanks in advance..

Doug

PS. 358 Hammer, if that hand cannon is a 338 Edge, your Orthopedic Surgeon must love you!!

To my knowledge there is no ready made DBM that would come close to long enough.

Yes, mine easily ejects loaded or spent rounds.

Good to know, I wont spend time looking for a DBM that doesnt exist, how many rounds do you get in internal box?

Thanks again,

Doug

2 Reliably, 3 will fit but tight. A little adjusting of the follower is on to do list to let the 3rd have more room.

Guess you can be the judge regarding the pain factor. I also have one in a rear grip 338 X 378 Weatherby. Surgeons have been sent home for good.
