I am new to bolt actions and my first is a Savage 11 'Hog Hunter' in 308.. (with Accu-Trigger)

I have gongs out at 450 & 750 yards and my buddies Sav 10 (Police 20" bull barrel/threaded) 308 wasn't consistently hitting...

http://executiveprotectionservice.us/forums/range2.jpg

I ordered the Savage 11 to see if I can do it cheaper and better..

We plan on adding a 1000 yard gong setup soon as well.. and since I got the 11 coming in we decided to compete yet help one another..

What I got inbound..

Savage 11 'HogHunter' 308 with 20" barrel (and threaded) $428
Mueller 4.5-14x40 APT (mil-dot) Tactical Scope $164
Low Quad Lock Rings $20
Weaver Brand 20 MOA base $38
Cheap 9-13 Bi-Pod $38

Total outlay is $688..

Hes got:

Savage 10 FPSR with 20" Bull Barrel (and threaded) $690
Sightmark 4-16x44 Triple Duty Tactical Scope $130 (was on sale)
Weaver 20 MOA base $38
Medium 6 Lug Rings $22
Cheap 9-13 Bi-Pod $38

Total: $938

He has had good luck with Fed OTM 168gr in his Model 10 and got sub-MOA at 100 yards.. so we may try using that ammo in both..

I have had LOT of round with 308's in my old Saiga 308 and my old AR-10.. something like 4000 rounds.. so I am hoping experience pays off..

Stay tuned..

The 168gr bullets are great out to about 800 yards but go trans sonic after that and get a little squirrely at 1k affecting accuracy. You may want to consider 175 or 178gr bullets for the longer range.

Nice guns + crappy scopes might be part of the consistency issue. Also, might try going to the 175gr SMK's. Supposedly the 168's are a bit finicky at 1k. I have yet to shoot that far with any gun so that is just what friends tell me.

I haven't shot mine yet. and originally the guy with the Sav 10 had no 20moa base and cheapy supplied single screw rings..

Since he's upgraded it shoots much better at 100 yards.. like 2 shots in one at 100 yards..

He'll be shooting his again tomorrow.. so I should have pics Monday.

So here are some pics to show the distance from my cabin to the 1000 yard target.. my buddies Sav 10 FPSR does dial in well (and back) from the 250, 500, & 750 yards..

I lost the other side of the 1000 yard target (supposed to be 2 silhouettes) .. so we couldn't judge hits.. he was missing the left target but we couldn't tell by how much even though I was standing only 70 yards to the left in a gully..

He was happy with 750 hits and dialing up/down with MOA..

Small updates..

Got my Model 11 'Hog Hunter'

http://executiveprotectionservice.us/forums/750project/StartSav11.jpg

And set the rear sight at 200 yards and shot 170 yards.. some windage adj. and was getting 'coms'. (I think I pulled the last shot to the right..)

First 3 are orange (pre windage adj.) the last 3 were yellow (circled).. (147gr Lithuania ammo.)

Got my rings.. still waiting on mount and scope.. :(

They key to long range is consistency. Sure you'll get occasional hits if you can dial your dope but every squirrel gets a nut once in awhile. If you want to do well by getting consistent hits you'll need to upgrade your glass and definately dump the stock. The tupperware stock on your hog hunter is your biggest liability. There is just too much flex in the stock. Your goal is to do it cheap and I can appreciate that. The Hog hunter is a great donor rifle and the barrel will do the job. I have run 175 SMK hand loads out to 1000 with the HH barrelled action but not with the stock rifle. Actuall the Mueller APT will do the job although with some effort on your part. The glass is OK but at those distances mirage and wind will make it difficult. My suggestion is at minimum a Boyds Tacticool with the pillars out of your hog hunter stock. The Tacticool is cheap but stiff enough to keep the rifle steady. A Bell and Carlson or HS Precision with an aluminum bed will be even better. Also get one of the target accutrigger springs which cost about $8 but will drop your trigger to 1.5lbs. You would not think the difference between 1.5 and 3lbs would be huge but when shooting those distances it makes a difference.

Good shooting!

Rs308.. thank you for the input.. I will be checking it out as it sits with the current stock and see what I can get out of it.

I heard the bigger 'pills' of 175 would be a good idea for things over 750 yards..

The Boyds Prairie Hunter stock may be on my list and I'll just customize that to fit the barrel diam... Not a fan of the 'Tacticool' stocks..

So by the grace of luck my 20 MOA riser/base came in..

the Mueller APT 4.5-14 scope (with mil-dot) is pretty darn clear for me.. Set for 10x for the mil-dot usage..

Well I finally shot it.. zero'd at 200 yards and 3" +/- high..

I decided to spare the stock and shoot off a simple Caldwell 'green' front bag.

http://executiveprotectionservice.us/forums/750project/200ydsZ.jpg

Then at 500 yards and 9 MOA up..

http://executiveprotectionservice.us/forums/750project/500yd.jpg

Then at 760 yards with 20 1/4 MOA up.

http://executiveprotectionservice.us/forums/750project/750yds.jpg

Then ran out of ammo.. ughh..

Be ordering more to get to the 1000 yard.. Stay tuned..

Also got a range for 125yd max going in..

Shot the 1000 yards today (actually it is 1016 yards).

Targets are kinda small 23x35 and B-21E with 10" torso area. Was 96' F when I was shooting..

Grabbed rifle from the case 'cold' and dialed to 34 MOA (per ballistic data).. then went to at it..

Shot 4 rounds of the Federal 168gr OTM ammo and got 2 hits..

http://executiveprotectionservice.us/forums/750project/1000yd1.jpg

2nd volley of 4 shots yielded another 2 more on the target. (1 on the upper left of cardboard)

http://executiveprotectionservice.us/forums/750project/1000yd2.jpg

I did this with no spotter.. just shot and walked out to check..

Will be doing again next week with the other party with the Savage 10 and will dial it in..

Overall VERY happy.
