I have a new savage 26" VLP and have been playing around with some 75 and 80 grain bullets .I set up cardboard at 200 yards and zeroed my savage and my rem 700 20" tactical 223. Then i backed up to 550 yards to shoot some steel plate,i dialed 13 MOA on my remington to get a on target.Next i get the savage out and only had to dial 9 MOA to get it on the steel.According to my ballistic app thats close to 3,000 FPS ,that sounds rather high to me . My load was 25.3 + 25.5 varget, thats where this rifle grouped the best. Any body else know if this the norm or am i pushing them too hard?Bolt lift was normal and my primers were slightly cratered but nothing bad from what i can tell.

that's what I get with 25.7 grains of RL-15 and a 77 grain match king

Seems about right off the top of my head without running the #'s....that extra 6" of barrel is probably mostly responsible for the difference....listen your rile, if there's no signs of excessive pressure (hard dolt lift, punched primers, cratered primer, etc....) yer good.

Sounds correct too me. I have a 26" Shilen barrel, 7 twist, shooting 80gr Bergers at 3020 with 24.5 Varget. My 500 yard come up is 9.5 MOA
No pressure signs at all.

Ran my loads over the chrony today the 75 grainers are 3,000 fps with 25.3 varget and the 80 grainers 2,900 with 24.4 varget. Im happy with those numbers, now maybe i can get to 1K with my .223

Welcome to the Forum.

I'm shooting pretty much the same load combo as Texas Solo in my Savage Model 12 F/TR with a 30" barrel. She is a hammer at 600 yards. I let a Buddy of mine let his Granddaughter shoot it at a 600 yard BR match in the Factory Division. She won the Division hands down, and one of her 5 shot groups was 2.94". Not to shabby for an 11 year old.

I had the opportunity to stretch her out to 800, 900. and 1000 yards last year. She did pretty well at 800, opened up considerably at 900, and was pretty pathetic at 1000. It was a windy day, so that didn't help matters any. I'd really like to give her another chance under better shooting conditions.

You gotta love a good shooting .223 at 600 yards

I also have a model 12 f t/r. Can I shoot 80 factory loads and also had loads using the 80 gr bullets without changing the internals of the gun?
?
