Why would a one piece base ever require an offset-type ring/mount? Theoretically, you could mount a 4 inch scope on a rifle with a one-piece base if you wanted to do so. Maybe we are talking two different things... When I say one piece base, I am talking a weaver and/or piccatinny style one piece base. Is there another type?

Never mind. Leupold and others make one pieces that do not offer flexibility in ring placement. I assumed too much. I haven't used anything but weaver or piccatinny in years. forgot about the others.

What is considered a short scope? Would a Vortex Viper 3-9 be long enough for a long action savage? They are about 12.4 inches I think.

I use a Weaver one-piece 0 MOA, Burris Sig Zee 1" High rings, for a Nikon 3-9x40 scope on my ol 110. It really doesn't make it any harder, or easier, to load/eject. Yes, there isn't as much room if you have sausage fingers, but everything still functions fine n dandy!

To each their own though.

Just in case anyone is wondering, the Vortex Viper w/ 1 inch talley low extended rings does NOT fit the Savage long action... At least not on the 111. Gotta mail 'em back and try to find some mediums somewhere now...

I mounted a Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 on my 116 and used the Talley medium extended base. I can get you the exact part number I ordered if you need it

Two piece bases are fine on the vast majority of hunting rifles. They're lighter and they offer better access.

I pretty much have switched over to the strong, great looking, and superbly made S&K's for all my hunting rifles. Very nearly as light as the also superb Talley LW's but oh so much better looking.
Being all steel they are also significantly stronger than the TLW's.
Extended bases available front or rear, SS available, fully custom bases available and their CS is second to none.

Did I mention how great they look?

I would like to get my hands on a set of the newish DNZ Hunt Masters 2pc scopemounts to get a feel for them. I think they're better looking than the TLW's despite the far-too-large DNZ carved into the top ring half.

A good scope needs good mounts, these are the ones I really like on Savage rifles. They are able to add up to 20 MOA to the rings. And the bases have good steel screws, and are available for the older flat back action. They are also available in 30 mm

why have separate rings and bases at all? I say Talley lightweights.

I do too.

I use Talley steel when I'm shooting a heavy recoiling rifle however. As you may have guessed, I'm a Talley fan.
