Wow! I missed that the Boyd's stock was a laminate stock! Looks like a synthetic, and just assumed it was... Had to go back and read the def again!

No experience, but... I have heard the laminates are nearly as stable as full synthetic... Really looking forward to how this one works out. I would expect, IF the laminate itself holds up, then the sealing of the bbl channel and bedding should be fine, I would think.

Just ordered this for her.... It got great reviews and the price was very reasonable: http://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Cheek-Rest-Kydex-Matthews/dp/B00G9PN4GW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1400763489&sr=8-1&keywords=kydex+cheek+rest

6 shot 100 yard group using 175gr SMK and IMR4320

I got the rifle bedded in the Boyd's Tacticool, added an oversized bolt handle, and installed the kydex cheek rest. I really like the feel of the new stock much better. Pictures!!

I finally got the OnTarget program which is pretty slick. I was pleasantly surprised that I achieved .75MOA:

Crazy-Chris,

I am building a similar rifle with a SS 10 x 42 scope. You said you used SWFA low rings? The photos show good clearance under the scope. I just ordered medium rings. Are you satisfied with the rings? Maybe I should swap out the medium rings for low rings. Thanks for your advice.

Yes, they are the SWFA low 30mm rings. I am satisfied with them and was impressed at the price- they seem to be re-branded Burris XTR rings but at a lower price. As far as clearance, you are correct- I have plenty of clearance using the 30mm low rings and the EGW base. With a 30mm, you can usually get away with a lower ring because with the 30mm tube, a 42mm objective only comes down 6mm more on the one side.

I'll let the picture speak for itself. Notice how the bell DOES hang slightly below the base... if I needed to adjust the scope further back for eye relief I would be somewhat limited by the low rings because it would eventually hit the scope base. For me, I didn't need that much room for adjustment.

I just finished getting the stock put together after painting. I'm pretty happy with the end result, I really like the subtle two tone look. I expect it to get a little worn since it's just a rattle can job but I'm okay with that. I think I've tinkered with just about everything I can afford to on her right now. Maybe someday when I'm rich I'll upgrade to a CDI bottom metal, add a brake/suppressor, and put a nicer scope on it. Until then, I'm going to spend money on reloading components and try to tighten the groups more and learn how to shoot long distance properly. Hope you all enjoyed thus far. I'll keep the thread updated with the reloading progress and the next time I get to shoot out at 1000yrds.

Chrazy - Great thread! I got the same 308 VT from Dick's a month ago went to the local 100 yd range and was getting .75" groups with factory Hornady 168 gr. HPBT Match. Did some reloads last week (Horn. 168 HPBT, 43 gr. 4064, COL 2.790) and got consistent > 0.5 groups? One 5 round group at 0.36"! I'm taking it to a 600 yd range next week and now I don't know if I should touch it or not!! I'm afraid I'll screw something up! What do you guys think - should I mess with it or just enjoy it?? Thanks...

That's great! I have some factory 168gr match ammo on its way so I can try out the 168s before going through the whole loading process. I started with 175s because I thought they would work better for 1000yrds. If you're a tinkerer like me, I'd say enjoy it until you're ready to start messing with it. I will say this- the upgraded stock on mine made it feel much more solid and improved the ergonomics. Are you shooting the package scope? Personally, I was not impressed with the rings/base from the package deal and would not trust them. They were soft aluminum and the rings were held on by a thumb screw that began to strip when I torqued them down with an armorer's screwdriver. I would recommend at least considering upgrading the rings and keeping an eye on the scope itself for any shift in zero, as it is a package scope.

The rifle looks nice but I must comment on the quality of the pictures.
Nice Lighting! Makes the rifle look all the better.

Chrazy - Yeah, my VT loves the 168 gr HPBT. Haven't found any 175 Sierra's to buy yet but will try them when I do. How do you like the Tacticool stock? Been looking at that as well. Was the metal target you showed above at 1000?? If so, great shooting! I'll be trying the 600 yard course at Ft. Carson later this week and post pic's (if they are good enough! ;)) Just saying - what a great accurate basic rifle to build on for $400!!!!!!

So far so good with the tacticool stock. It was easy to work with (sanding the barrel channel, floating the rear tang, sanding out material to make room for bedding, drilling holes for the kydex cheek rest). Most would argue that a fiberglass stock would be better, but the tacticool was too good of a price to pass up. I'm happy with it so far. It really helps make that heavy 24" barrel feel more manageable and less awkward. Yes, the plate was 1000yrds. I live in C Springs so I've shot at Carson a few times. I mostly shoot at Pikes Peak gun club but it only has a 200yrd range. I need to check out that Carson 600yrd range one of these times. I didn't realize it went out to 600, that would be fun. Are you talking about the antelope silhouettes or an actual berm at 600?

I couldn't agree more with you regarding this rifle being a good one to build on. Before I started the project I was thinking I would start with a Stevens action, but that would have ended up costing more in the long run. The savage factory barrels have a good reputation for accuracy.

I am loading 168 gr SMK BTHP with 44 gr of 4064 and achieving 0.5 MOA with a model 10T heavy barrel .308, chrono @ 2758, 2.80 OAL, my goal is to get to 600 yds. I started with 41.5 and worked up to 44.5, settling on 44.

I ordered SWFA low rings to replace the medium SWFA rings. Also replaced two piece mounts with one piece mounts to improve eye relief. Now, low rings won't work on my set up. I had to move my scope forward quite a bit to get my eye relief correct. After that, there was interference at the eye piece of the scope. Back to the medium rings. That set up, with one piece mount, seems to work. Low rings for sale on ebay.
