Thinking about building a rifle... So what is best course of action? By a used Model 111 or 11 By a new rifle or get a new action from one of the various suppliers? Cost vs availability

I have found lately it is about 6 one way and half a dozen the other.
Short action: call northland and order a action.
Long action: pic up a rifle to tear down.
Going accutrigger: buy savage.
Going aftermarket: buy stevens.

Most of my builds have come from new rifles that I tore down and sold the parts I wasn't using.

Keep your eyes open for sales, and you can do pretty good. The last two builds I did were using two new Savage 111's, in 25-06 with Laminate stocks and accu-triggers, I found for $399 each.

Watch for sales and watch the used racks. Best deals can be found in the used racks if you know how to recoup some of your investment. Choose a cartridge with a higher demand so when you sell the factory barrel. Same goes for your stock also. Again, that's only if you have a choice between chamberings and stocks when shopping in the bargain basement price range.

Thanks to all who have answered. I have been looking around here at pawn shops and a couple LGS and not found anything. I shoot lefty so that is my first choice, but righty works just as well.I am leaning together a 223 build or308. No real preference, but those are calibers I already have headspace gauges for. I saw one model 110 at a pawnshop that wanted 650 for a scarred rust marked gun. It is a quest.

Try Walmart and Dicks. Dicks has them on their website. I picked my 11vt up with scope combo for $499. I chose that one because I knew the factory barrel would be good enough for me.

I know the cabela's be me had a model 10 heavy barrel in 22-250 on sale for $419, and a couple sporter model 10s in 243 on clearance for $379. All had Accu-triggers.

For a 223 or 308 you simply can't beat a Hog Hunter with just a stock change, assuming the 20" barrel works for your purpose.
