Just bought a new savage 12bvss in 22 250 and ordered but haven't received yet a leupold vx 2 6-18 40 ao target. I'm going to use leupold standard rings and bases but not sure on ring height. I would like to use lows and get the scope down as much as I can. Will this be possible or will I have to use medium rings? Thanks in advance!

I use Weaver medium rings on my 12BVSS in .308 with a Weaver T36 scope which has a 40mm objective. I would not want the objective any closer to the barrel-clearance is maybe 1/8 inch.

Leupold's mounting system form says you need medium rings with the heavier barrels. With a sporter barrel, you could use the lows with the 40mm AO optics.

You could also go to DNZ mounts. Their low would be alright for you rifle.

And they will fit on the Leupold standard base he is using?

It really depends on the shooter where you would be comfortable shooting it prone, seating/standing. Some guys with big faces (bone structure) may not be able to see a good sight picture or they are very uncomfortable looking through the scope with there cheek bone welded on the stock... A .5"-1" from the top of the barrel to the bottom of the bell of the scope does not make a big difference on the POI nor did I noticed any in my experience...

I just got my 12 FLV. With my weaver bases, and my Vortex 6-18, Burris medium rings were too short. My high Leupold PWR rings fit well.

Got the scope in today and mounted it with low leupold rings. I bought both med and low figure I'm sure I'll eventually use both. The low rings left at least 3/32" maybe 1/8" space between the barrel and the closest point on the scope which was the AO ring on the objective bell. Took it to the range broke the barrel in and first group after break in was a 3 shot one ragged hole! Very comfortable to shoot and worked out great! Thanks for all the help everyone and incase anyone needs to know in the future those low leupold rings worked great with a 40 mm leupold ao scope!
