270 reloading

If am helping a friend get started in reloading. He has a 223 (which I know we'll) and a 270, which I have never loaded. He has dies, lots of once fired brass, and some bullets. What is the go to powder? I am just thing 3006 powders. 4350? 4064? What would be the one powder for him to buy? I can hook him up with primers.

H4831 has been the goto powder for the 270 since the days it was sold in brown paper bags for a buck to buck fifty a pound, a little less if you bought a 5lb bag. As a kid I remember the bags were marked with black crayon, magic markers weren't invented yet.:p

Some use IMR or H4350 with good results.

Bullets? 130s are pretty much the first choice but some prefer a 150. Dad was the exception, he liked the 170 RNs, Speer IIRC.

With the "New" H4831/H4831SC I start at 58-58.5 grains with a 130 and go from there.

Thanks Bill. I think he purchased a couple of different 130s and a box of 150s. I have several pounds of 4831. We will start with that.

I have been using Win brass, 130gr Nosler partitions, CCI LRM, and 59.0gr of H4831 for over 40 years. It' accurate and deadly and a couple of grains south of MAX.

Once you get him set up with a good, accurate load for his 130 grain bullet, experiment with some Hornady 110 VMAX. You can work up some safe loads that will really scream as they exit the barrel, and then do major damage to feral hogs, coyotes and bobcats. I've also taken a few of our small Central Texas deer with the 110's, and they kill 'em dead right there with one shot.

54.0 grains oh H4350 has been a pet load of mine for years. Ive tried it in three different 270s and they all liked it. Look into the berger classic hunter bullets with a bc of .497 they are only a few points lower than the berger 150s and they kill like lightning.

You might also want to try those, Sierra and Speer 90gr HP, they turn your 270 into a varmint rifle, they are also really devastating on hogs and coyotes, so basically from groundhogs to full sized bucks, pretty versatile as far as loads go, I have a 26" 11 twist Mcgowen and with 65gr of RL17 and those 90gr hit, 4000fps religiously with sub 1/2 groupings, I got so use to using it as a varmint rifle that I ended up putting an 8-32 X 50 scope on it, since there is no bullet drop until way past 400 yards, pretty cool, no pretty awesome, as much as it is ragged on and not sexy the 270 win will still be here long after a lot of other hip calibers will have come and gone.

DeanAgreed, plus you can almost always find ammo in a pinch. I think the 270 bullet does exceptionally well with a hefty amount of powder behind it--my developments in 6.8 sp have not been as good for some reason. The only drawback to the 270 win--and the reason I think it's not more popular, is the rather hefty kick in recoil for "average" shooters.

IMR or H4350 at 55 to 56grs......IMR 4831 at around 57grs and H4831 at around 60grs all with 130gr bullets all are great in my 270Win

The 4350's and 4831's are just the ticket, depending on the bullet powder combo and what the rifle shoots best, for the old .270 Winpedestrian.
Just a little play on words for a very capable, yet pedestrian, caliber.

As everyone has mentioned above, H4831 in regular or Sc flavor and the 4350's are made for the .270. I stoke both of mine, a Win Mod 70 and a Encore with the H4831SC.

Another good bullet to try is the Nosler 140 Accubond. You can pick these up once in awhile as "blems" from the Nosler Pro Shop. Out of all the "Blems" I have bought and shot through various calibers, I have never been able to tell the difference in accuracy or performance on game. You just have to grab them when they have them listed.

This is pretty much what I picked up my 270 barrel for. I was planning on sending some of the 95gr TSX bullets through it at lightning speeds, but just have not gotten around to trying them as of yet, too many other irons in the fire.

Boots is spot on about those Barnes 95gr TTSXs they are bar none, but at a buck a piece I can't afford them, you see I am already sending all my money, to a guy who machines barrels in LA, Barnes also makes 85gr that are boat loads of fun as well.
